Instagram not an instant fix for ailing Facebook

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Revenue forecasts from Facebook Inc that alarmed investors, fueling the worst day ever for its shares on Thursday, add to the pressure on its Instagram unit to win over more of the ad buyers that have long found success on the company’s flagship app.

Instagram and Facebook users see about the same number of ads, but Instagram ad prices are half of what Facebook charges because of the limited number of advertisers vying for spots on Instagram, four ad buyers said.

Investors have been counting on revenue from Instagram to overcome stalling usage of Facebook’s core app. But the gap it has to fill has widened sooner than expected.

The social media company suffered the biggest one-day wipeout in U.S. stock market history, losing more than $120 billion in market capitalization as shares fell 19 percent a day after executives forecast years of lower profit margins due to regulatory pressure over privacy.

Instagram users are not accustomed to clicking on links in posts, which makes the service less effective at generating online purchases than Facebook, said Erik Huberman, founder of the ad buying agency Hawke Media.

Data about viewership of ads is lacking in comparison to Facebook, he added.

I noticed a few years ago that whenever I searched for an item to buy, suddenly, for a few days, I was getting tons of ads on FaceBook for the very item I’d already purchased.

It’s kinda funny, but I’ve NEVER clicked on an ad in Facebook. Ever. And, frankly, if I am going to buy an item online it is almost always either Amazon or Costco. I used to use a lot of different internet entities, but they all are available through Amazon (even parts for my 1960 John Deere Tractor) and shipping is free. So’s Costco.

Ads have always been useless to me. But that’s just me.

True. The ONLY solution for Facebook is a massive changes in allowing users to set up privacy controls and an equally massive change what is allowed on Facebook. It's possible that what is allowed and not allowed may have to be farmed out to a truly non-partisan third party.

I have not opened my Facebook account for several month now, nor do I expect to anytime soon, if ever. Some of the exchanges got really nasty, and there seemed to be a lot of curtailment in the circulation permitted. Social interaction is just not that valuable to me.

I have NEVER opened up anything in Instagram, and have no idea about how to get onto Twitter. Makes my personal life so much more calm, I believe.

They, FB, surreptitiously scan your computer for cookies, search terms and visitation logs while you are on FB.

They sell this info to advertisers.

The advertisers then target you with ads for stuff they think you want.

Quit FB if you do not want them to do this.

It’s in their user agreement.................

They all miss the point that when they start or continue playing with who’s in and who’s out, they lose.

Yes, I understand all of that. My point is that It is useless for them in my case.

I was just making an observation, not complaining. :)

Exactly.

BTW, I use an avast browser at home. Back when I used lots of different sites, I’d use Google in Firefox to find the product, and then cut and paste the URL into avast to go there, in an attempt to keep Google out of the transaction. I don’t know if it works, but it’s worth a try. Now I just use duckduckgo for my searches though.

On a side note, the duck will not work at my office. They’ve blocked it for some reason.
