Liberal Blind Spots Are Hiding the Truth About ‘Trump Country’
NY Times ^ | 7/20/18 | Smarsch

Posted on 07/20/2018 10:54:57 AM PDT by pabianice

For one thing, it’s not Trump country. Most struggling whites I know here live a life of quiet desperation, mad at their white bosses, not resentful toward their co-workers or neighbors of color...

Like many Midwestern workers I know, my dad has more in common ideologically with New York’s Democratic Socialist congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez than with the white Republicans who run our state. Having spent most of his life doing dangerous, underpaid work without health insurance, he supports the ideas of single-payer health care and a universal basic income...

Got as far as ‘white bosses’ to realize this is another hate-filled racial attack on fly-over country, a.k.a., deplorables.

"universal basic income"...

I'm wondering just exactly what "basic income" looks like?

Media coverage suggests that economically distressed whiteness elected Mr. Trump, when in fact it was just plain whiteness.
. . . and you indicate that your father is white, and presumably you are too. So by your own “logic” you are a bigot, I guess. Why does anyone listen to you?

Propaganda - Ortiz and sanders said last week this would be their new line of attack and, oh look, suddenly the NYT publishes a story about just what they said.

Just change the pronouns from "he" to "she" and I still stand by my comment.

Her dad and the "many other midwestern workers she knows" need to move to Venezuela and get a taste of what they are asking for.

They'll all be back here in a heartbeat kissing the ground and praising America.

Who thinks people should get free stuff? Even Bernie's campaign said they were for free college tuition but were hesitant to make it a formal plank of his platform until they figured out how to pay for it. It's been crickets ever since.

Instead of screwing up the most successful country in the history of the world, they need to move out and discover the benefits of not having healthcare, toilet paper, water or food in the stores.

It means I work hard for my paycheck and then give half of it to the government so they can redistribute it to some lazy ass who doesn't want to work. Then we both have the same low income, except that I worked for mine and they didn't. How long to you think that situation would last? It wouldn't.

Before long, everyone will want the free income without working and the house of socialist cards will fail.

Some fuzzy-headed Leftist mayor in Kalifornia is going to give people $500 or a $1000 a month to see how it works. His initial funding is from a private source but when the taxpayers have to fund it, it will end quickly.

I read all the way up to corporations being the tip of the sword. I am on my fourth corporation now, and it’s doing okay, but with huge amounts of my sweat and my money. I employee people and they are always finding something else they can do for me, so I’m guessing they don’t resent me too much. I am currently working on another venture. I will be risking my time and money. So, yeah, I’m the tip of the sword drawing blood from the working poor. Yeah. Sure.

Ms. Smarsh is the author of the forthcoming “Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth.”

I wonder how long Ms. Smarsh has been working on this book and what years her research and reporting cover.

The title seems to suggest that those who work hard in the heartland are falling behind and suffering.

From what I can infer from this article I suspect the author is going to blame Republicans in the heartland for Republican policies that have caused workers in the heartland to suffer.

If they are suffering, I'm sure there are many factors but the author will likely focus her critic on evil heartless Republicans and 'if they had only voted Democrat they would be thriving today'.

A leech. A leech is a bloodsucking parasite. Leaching is water seeping out of a material.

Thanks pabianice. Naturally the partisan media shills try to spin it, acting as if they’re really interested in it. Instead, they are concern trolls, I suspect we’ll see the same talking points from other DNC media mouthpieces in the fake news industry.

Didn’t have to read two paragraphs to know (without looking) that the author was female and a classic snowflake who has a hat full of others to blame on every wrong in her world. Blame the blasted corporations for extortion because they gave her father a job in the front office. I’m over sick of it. I sure wish I could be shut in a room with just one “progressive” NYT so-called writer. I could tell them why America loves Trump.
