Paralympian Actress Katy Sullivan Chides Dwayne Johnson For Playing Amputee In ‘Skyscraper’
Deadline ^ | July 16, 2018 | Katy Sullivan

Posted on 07/18/2018 7:19:52 AM PDT by EdnaMode

Dear Dwayne,

My name is Katy Sullivan. I am an actress, Paralympian, double above-the-knee amputee from birth, and I have a request to ask of you. You seem like a genuinely good dude, so I hope this will be received in the spirit that it was intended: Actor to Actor.

Your most recent film, Skyscraper, opens this weekend. Cheers! Congratulations! However, my request is for you to stop saying “Yes” to roles like the one in that movie. And here’s why…

Individuals with disabilities make up almost 20% of the world’s population. We are the largest minority and the “most marginalized group in Hollywood,” according to a 2017 study conducted by Fox, CBS and the Ruderman Family Foundation (an organization I know you are aware of and engaging with now). The study found that in last year’s TV season, less than 2% of characters were written to have a disability and of THOSE characters, 95% of the roles were filled with able-bodied actors.

While I am thrilled that a film about a kick-ass veteran and father (who is a unilateral below-the-knee amputee) got greenlit in the first place, the problem is this perpetuates the fact that we’re not given the agency to tell our own stories.

This very week, Scarlett Johansson has been getting a lot of heat from the LGBTQ community for portraying a transgender character in Rub and Tug. Rightfully so, as there are many talented trans actors out there who could be portraying that role instead of her. Actors that would bring beautiful and complicated authenticity to the project without having to reach outside themselves. The outcry is about inclusion. TRUE inclusion.

Scarlett Johansson can't play a trans character because she isn't transgender.

Dwayne Johnson can't play an amputee because he isn't an amputee.

Meanwhile....

Neil Patrick Harris plays straight characters, even though he is gay.

The Founding Fathers are being played by black, hispanic and Asian actors in Hamilton.

The Harry Potter actors aren't wizards and witches in real life.

Mark Hamill isn't actually a Jedi.

Gary Oldman isn't really Winston Churchill.

It's called ACTING.

The Rock also pretended to be the Scorpian King.

Actors pretend to be characters. It’s not a mystery.

It's called acting. That is, actors pretend to be other people. You don't have to actually be, say, a criminal to play a criminal. Same with a lot of other things.

Funny how an actor can pretend to be some things, but cannot pretend to be other things. An actor can pretend to be a SEAL, the President, a lawyer, doctor, mobster, cop, whatever, but they draw a line at race, sex, and physical impairment? How can these morons be taken seriously?

I keep thinking we’ve reached peak insanity and each day we fall further. This is as dumb as the Scarlett Johansson situation. These are ACTORS. they are at some level skilled at playing other people. Most who play military never served. We have English and Australian people playing southern roles with a heavy accent. We have Americans playing foreigners. Is all this prohibited now? Maybe it is time to shut Hollywood down so no one can be offended ever again.

To be fair, Scarlett Johannsen has no superpowers and stinks in the Avengers movies.

Jeter gave her Herpes too.

No point to this post. Just saying. The six million dollar man post is way better. Jeter gave her Herpes.

Gary Sinise played a double amputee vet and is probably the best friend vets have in the movie industry.

As well, acting is generally an acquired skill. Some people do it well; others don’t.

My wife and I watch movies on Prime and Netflix. Because there are only a limited supply of films, we wind up watching some indie pics. We readily see why these movies are “indie,” and don’t have the backing of a major studio: The writing, direction, production, and especially, the ACTING are of low quality.

A major studio may want to go with an established actor/actress who has a track record of excellent acting rather than the politically-correct choice of a wannabe actor who is a tranny/homo/disabled/etc.

She is asking him to stop saying yes to making a living. I doubt anybody feels that politically correct. Would she turn down a role to play something she isn’t? Isn’t it called “acting” because people “act” like something they aren’t? Take spies, or serial killers. Should an actor turn down a role as James Bond because he isn’t a double-o spy? Or, a serial killer? (Man, that would make for in interesting casting couch moment.)

Hopefully, this nutter just killed her acting “career”. She’s striking futile and poorly-aimed blows at the moneymakers in movies, in order to make a name for herself.

Weird how some people are so obsessed with their own personal stake in a cause that they lose sight of the big picture. I'm certain that more recognition of the amputee cause will be drawn by having an A-list actor like "the Rock" headline instead of an unknown, but genuine, amputee. I guess Maui still can't catch a "you're welcome" break.

He produced the movie, meaning he helped fund it.

Pay for your own movie, Sweetie.

“the problem is this perpetuates the fact that we’re not given the agency to tell our own stories”

Listen, snowflake, Hollywood is not going to hand a hundred million dollar budget film to some random person just because they are missing a drumstick.

Maybe if there was an amputee who also had a proven history of helming Hollywood blockbusters, but since that isn’t the case, they are just going to hire the Rock and green screen his leg out.
