WESTON, Florida -- A Florida mother blames the death of her 15-year-old daughter on what she calls confusing packaging for Reese's Chips Ahoy cookies.
In a July 12 Facebook post, Kellie Travers-Stafford wrote that her daughter Alexi mistakenly ate one of the cookies at a friend's house despite her peanut allergy, because the top of the familiar red packaging was peeled back, hiding the Reese's label.
She says Alexi felt tingling in her mouth on June 25 and they administered two Epipens but Alexi quickly went into anaphylactic shock, stopped breathing and died within an hour and a half of eating the cookie.
"As a mother who diligently taught her the ropes of what was okay to ingest and what was not, I feel lost and angry because she knew her limits and was aware of familiar packaging, she knew what "safe" was," Travers-Stafford said in the post. "A small added indication on the pulled back flap on a familiar red package wasn't enough to call out to her that there was "peanut product" in the cookies before it was too late."
Travers-Stafford, who lives in Weston, which is near Fort Lauderdale, said she is sharing Alexi's story to "spread awareness."

I grew up in peanut country and we never had anyone die from them. Most farmers grew peanuts and teens would help with the harvest. Peanut harvests are a dusty job. The wind spread it and it was tracked all over town. Everyone had peanut dust on them. Then the dried plants are fed to livestock so more human interaction. The 1970s were the days of free government peanut butter. Peanut butter (and real butter and cheese) was given out to low income families and the leftover supply was given to anyone who wanted it. Our school lunch trays had some form of peanut butter on them every day - homemade cookies, peanut butter with honey for hot yeast rolls, a dollop for apple slices or a dixie cup full. No child ever dropped dead at their lunch table.
Doctors today are saying parents are causing kids to develop severe allergies by not giving pb or such to them as babies. Doctors are advising babies get little bits of pb. Peanuts haven’t changed, people have.
This is a tragic shame, but I do have to wonder, why the host family didn’t have her EPI pen?

I may be opening a can of worms here but the reason I think we are hearing about this is Darwinism in reverse. More people who would have died early in the life in a earlier time, are surviving to pass on their genetic makeup.
Life was tough back before we have clean, potable water, a working sewage systems and antibiotics. Even healthy people could go to bed healthy and in the morning have a disease that would kill them by nightfall.
Life goes on.
I dated a woman in Boston a few times and she had a known shellfish allergy. We dined one night at a famous seafood restaurant on the waterfront and she ordered lobster. I had always thought food allergies were overblown, but not after what I saw happened to her. It didn’t take long for hives to break out and, before a couple hours had passes, she was covered with them. Fortunately, no anaphylactic shock problems, just discomfort.
That was the worst ending to a romantic night out I ever had!

Ditto here. I was always filthy as a kid, playing hard outdoors all the time every season. Worked in power plants for five years. Gardening for years with no gloves. Hardly any allergies — just seem to have been a bit allergic to pollen this past spring and excessive dust has always made me sneeze. Just went through a battery of food allergy tests and all were negative.

No. Monsanto hasn't gotten it's hands on peanut genetics... yet. The peanuts grown today are the same peanuts we've always grown. However, Monsanto is coating the seeds with chemicals to produce higher yields. Could be this is what is causing the problem but we'll never get it studied or will Monsanto ever back off destroying our food.
BTW, the peanut itself is the seed. The peanut plant is relatively disease free so doesn't need much in the way of chemicals or human intervention to help it flower, pollinate and ripen like other fruits and vegetables. It isn't a nut so those who claim they're allergic to peanuts and other nuts are nuts themselves. Peanuts are legumes like beans and peas. The peanut itself grows underground like potatoes and is protected by a husk/shell. It's growth process is a brilliant protection shield from disease and infestations but nothing can stand up to evil Monsanto chemicals.

They injected her with TWO EPI pens, but that wasn’t enough. It isn’t clear if that happened at her friend’s house or when she got home.
Sad, but at SOME POINT. personal responsibility has to take precedence.

When I was a kid, mother decided I was allergic to strawberries because I got a rash once after drinking a red cola that was named “strawberry”. Not that it had any strawberry in it but more than likely the red dye #whatever caused the rash. Well, I wasn’t allowed to eat strawberries. Snort, I eat them all the time.
I used to have sneezing fits when crossing the county line because that’s where the cedar trees started. For some reason I wasn’t allergic to cedar trees on the family farm or the cedar trees we cut for Christmas trees. I’m guessing it wasn’t the cedar that caused by sneezing but whatever it was, it happened every time. I’ve lived within that county line now for 20+ years and have less and less allergic fits. Well, “cedar” fits are almost nonexistent but fits over demonrats are on a high.
If someone has a life threatening allergy, they should know not to eat anything they didn’t prepare themselves. Period. No excuses. No blaming others.
Our vet has a sign on the door asking that no one enter if they’ve used coconut shampoo or lotion. Never knew anyone was allergic to coconut until now.
Sorry, but anyone with such severe reactions should get a job working at home. The rest of the world shouldn’t have to change their eating habits or hand lotion to accommodate the very, very few. Hey, I’m allergic to demonrats so they should stay 100 feet from me.
