Should people with type 2 diabetes follow very low carbohydrate diets? The American Diabetes Association (ADA) says "no", but a small study from Sweden suggests such a diet may be one of the best ways to manage the disease and reduce the need for medication.
Many people are essentially cured of their [type 2] diabetes by low-carbohydrate diets, but that message is not getting out," says low-carb proponent and biochemistry professor Richard Feinman, PhD, of the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
While agreeing that carbohydrate restriction helps people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar, ADA spokesman Nathaniel G. Clark, MD, tells WebMD that the ADA does not recommend very low-carb diets because patients find them too restrictive.
"We want to promote a diet that people can live with long-term," says Clark, who is vice president of clinical affairs and youth strategies for the ADA. "People who go on very low carbohydrate diets generally aren't able to stick with them for long periods of time."

Low carb, high fat WORKS! I have essentially “cured” my diabetes. I never had the first symptom but was diagnosed as diabetic about 18 months ago. My A1C was 10. After reading everything I could get my hands on I decided the American Diabetes Association is a joke and anyone who follows their recommended diet will REMAIN a diabetic. I went on a low carb, high fat diet and within 12 weeks my A1C went down to 6.1 and as of a few months ago it was down to 6.0. I also lost 25 pounds. My wife, who isn’t diabetic, has lost nearly 60 pounds on a low carb, high fat diet in just 8 months. It seems that mainstream medicine is slowly and reluctantly coming on board with the LCHF diet. For nearly 50 years the government has been wrong about what we should eat but that’s not too surprising since they are rarely right about much of anything.
I got gout on low carb high protein diets. drink lots of water and black cherry juice.
They don’t want anyone to try anything that doesn’t involve prescription drugs.
Once the ads appear on TV the doctors get the Rxs going like an avalanche.
One study when print media were flourishing showed doctors prescribed much more of a drug if the ads were in color than the same ads for the same drug in black and white. Like ads for shoes,Oreos and car insurance. How sick.
Soon the doctors will blurt out Taylor Swift and Katy Perry take these pills—you should, too!
60 t0 90 carbs is generous. My Doctor wanted only 20grams per day.
That’s a toughy.
I used low carb beer. The greatest weight loss I had was to give up
beer and alcohol.
“If theres an Aldi nearby, get yourself a package of their Ground Top Sirloin at $3.99 a pound. Make yourself a delicious 8 ounce chopped steak. Shake a little Mrs. Dash steak seasoning on top and broil it, fry it or throw it on the grill and enjoy! Very little masticating involved, and oh, so delicious!”
...and throw some cheese on the steak, if you really want something delicious - and still 0 carbs.
It’s not the money as it is personal discipline. But I know of many type 2 diabetics who are thin. It’s not just a weight issue.
“Yep. Diabetes occurs when the body can no longer create enough insulin to control the blood sugar. Low carbs means no blood sugar spike and no need for the body to pump out large amounts of insulin.”
Yep, it’s called Insulin Resistance, at least for Type 2’s. The body needs more and more insulin to push glucose out of the blood and into the cells, until the insulin production is maxed out. So there’s tons of insulin, it’s just that the body can’t effectively use it. Reset the body by low carb / fasting, and then the body can use its own insulin - and say goodbye to diabetes.
And yes, it may be tough for some people, but OTHERS may prefer living healthy into old age without the diabetes complications (which you get whether you use drugs or not).
It’s pretty STUPID to not, at least, give people the OPTION of ending the condition.
Its the money for the pharm industry, which is why low carb diets are not encouraged.
I realize they wouldnt work for everyone, but they sure would help an awful lot.
Low carb IS too restrictive when adopted as a new lifestyle. It’s stupid.
The ignorance in this thread is prolific, but I get it. After my own health recovery and turning EVERY single health concept on its head - which included correcting my own ignorance with a couple thousand hours of research & writing - it was clear that something else was needed.
After speaking with hundreds of people, 2 things have become clear:
1. People believe what they want to believe (confirmation bias),
2. People will not change until they have an impetus to change, usually a health event.
I will say this in support of everyone here trying to change, particularly those who have “accidentally” accomplished a goal: Congratulations, but I cannot tell you why due to the fact that my new approach is secret (it’s not what you think). Note: I write “accidentally” with intent. Think about it, but there’s much, much more to your health equation than the tests which, ironically, originate from the AMA.
Insofar as the determination of those who are desperately seeking a ‘diet’ to work for them: STOP. It’s nuts. Even Keto is not panacea. In fact, the dark irony is that Keto is Atkins redux with a twist. A short history lesson will reveal the facts.
My methodology is principally one of avoidance, but first a person needs to acknowledge all the threats around them. I’m not going to preach nor am I going to go down a list.
I refer to it as a “manner of living” and if anyone needs a “guide” you can look to Okinawa and their “food pyramid”. If grains and carbs - generically, as most ignorant people refer to them - are so evil, then Okinawa is an aberration. My position is that it cannot be dismissed. Ignore it at your own peril, but living a life as Okinawans do is much more than just reading a book, as we’re not “in” Okinawa (obviously). End of free advice, as there are about 1001 variables, including health conditions for which avoiding lectins - including grains - are mandatory (gluten is a lectin, btw). Phytates too. Gluten-free is BS unless it’s part of a broader regimen with a purpose (i.e., “to heal”). Throwing a bone, research Dr. Sidney Valentine Haas.
With that, I might have just saved some lives.
One final note: People who have read my book draft accomplished everything shared in this thread (not going to go into the cholesterol ignorance), but they did so NOT by avoiding CARBs, but by avoiding everything on my Blacklist. Right there I torpedo the “low-carb” religion and sends it right to the bottom, along will all other ‘diets’, including anything which resembles “low fat” (we need fat; you are killing yourself without it).
Best of health. Truly, but get off the damned ‘diet’ train.
I lied. One for final thought:
For those seeking a source of Omega 3, ignore the labels, as they are false. If a label says Chia or Flax and it says 1800mg of Omega 3, that’s only if you’re a chicken (one example). Divide by 10 and that’s the most you can expect (typically half of that, or 5%). This false labeling thing is a pet peeve of mine and one not yet addressed by the so-called authorities. Trust me, or research the human inability to digest seed and absorb ALA. Your choice. There are 3 types of Omega 3 fats and two are proven to be absorbed by humans; they also just happen to come from fish and animals having consumed the other one, converting into the other 2. Basically, you can get Omega 3 by feeding flax to your chickens and pigs (aside from fish, of course).
But what if you stopped buying all their expensive medications??!)

Exactly right and just think the ACS, etc all have their axes to grind to the statement “No, do nothing to help your health....just keep sending your money in so that our chairman and his ilk will make >$500.000 bucks per year salary because they are so special.
From my experience it is very easy to stick to a low carb diet as long as you stick to it initially for 21 days.
Can you point me to that thread?
Thanks!

Interesting. I will look forward to your book.
Thanks!
Thanks. It’s a crazy world, the “health & wellness” world (everything outside of the AMA).
But it will all make sense once my new concept is published (unless someone else beats me to it).
Again, not what anyone thinks, but the bones I threw out for FReepers have all the right clues without drawing a map.
Can you post the keto pancakes recipe or direct me to a place to find one? Thanks.
Yep, good options out there!
Diet is not the root cause of type 2. Saying quit your meds is dangerous.
This reasoning is the same B.S. that says cancer drugs are pushed by big Pharma.
go holistic.
