Scientists have questioned the credibility of Pliny the Elder's now 2,000-year-old account of orcas hunting whale calves near the Strait of Gibraltar, since those marine mammals aren't known to visit that area. Now, archaeological evidence suggests Pliny knew exactly what he was talking about. Researchers discovered whale bones from the North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) and the Atlantic gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) within the ruins of an ancient Roman fish-processing facility located along the Strait of Gibraltar. The discovery was published today (July 10) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Nice to know Pliny the Elder giving the Roman equivalent of the middle finger to the modern day doubters.

What would he have had to gain by making it up? Nothing therefore bias should have been toward accepting his account as factual. But now the stupid will take another turn into being evidence of “climate change,” bet on it.

What would he have had to gain by making it up? Nothing ...True. However, many ancient documents of geography or natural history have significant errors. The most likely reason is, not that it was "made up" by the author, but that information went through multiple stages of hearsay, accumulating errors with each transmission, before it was written down for publication.

How else would Pliny have known how to identify them? Did he travel to the Atlantic coast?

They used to say that the eyewitness accounts of his son, Pliny the Younger, regarding the eruption of Vesuvius were silly sensationalism.
Then Mt St Helens blew in a similar way and they decided he was actually really accurate.
