A 24-year-old American tourist caused panic at Vienna Airport when she put an unexploded World War II artillery shell in front of Austrian customs officials and asked whether the "souvenir" could be taken onboard her flight home.
Officials quickly called the bomb disposal unit to remove and dispose of the 7.5 cm (3 inch) caliber dud tank artillery shell. The incident shut down the arrival and luggage hall for 15 minutes.
Police said at no time were passengers under threat.
The 24-year-old was reported to prosecutors for negligent endangerment and fined 4,000 ($4,694).
The woman had found the World War II relic while hiking.
According to the Krone newspaper, the woman reportedly cleaned the artillery shell in her hotel room so as not to get her clothes dirty when she packed it up to take to the airport.

The 24-year-old was reported to prosecutors for negligent endangerment and fined 4,000 ($4,694). She's was dumb. That fine seems a bit high for something clearly not intended to be malicious. Especially since I hardly think she needs to be made an example of to warn other people who stumble across unexploded tank shells in the woods and want to bring them home. Proprietorial discretion is called for in my opinion.

The world is insane. An American follows rules and asks if she may take this WWII artifact home? Airport partially shuts down. Woman basically arrested. Told that to get out of jail it costs her $5,000! The poor girl cleaned the old relic, too, before bringing it to airport. Very Austrian of her.
The shell didn’t go off. Officials said, “At no time anyone in airport was in danger.”
Thus, insanity. What was the rule following American guilty of besides not knowing anything about munitions?

PAK 40 HE? Maybe. The Soviets had 76mm artillery as well.

Proprietorial discretion is called for in my opinion. Should read "prosecutorial discretion".

Do you know what kind of a bomb it was? Either a German or Soviet artillery shell, by the looks of it.

It’s obvious her intent wasn’t malicious. What retards.

When my dad was stationed in Hawaii (Oahu) in the late 50's we lived on a canal and used to use some " objects" to climb down nearer the water. Somebody's mom came looking for us one day and freaked out because they were shells from back in 1941. Neighborhood evac'd while the ordnance was removed. 💣👀☠👹
