A 68-year-old New Jersey grandmother died last week after a company shut off her electricity because of an overdue bill -- which cut off the oxygen tank she relied on to keep breathing, a family member said.
Linda Daniels, who is in hospice care, was in her Newark home on Thursday for hours after her oxygen tank and air-conditioning were shut off around 10 a.m., NJ.com reported. Her family said they were with Daniels pleading with PSE&G to turn on the electricity until the 68-year-old died just before 4:30 p.m. from heart failure.
"She was trying to catch her breath she was gasping for air," Daniels granddaughter, Mia, 28, told the news site Sunday. "She suffered and she passed right in front of us. She was gasping until the time she died."
Desiree Washington, Daniels daughter, added that the family made numerous calls to the utility company, but its response came too late.
"They told us they would be rolling a truck. The truck did not come until the next day, Washington said.
Mia added: "They started getting nasty after awhile, telling us they had too many tickets out on this.
--snip--
He added that PSE&G did not know about Daniels medical condition until after the power was shut off.

Probably an oxygen concentrator. Tanks are usually provided for ambulatory use by the med equipment company. My wife has been on home oxygen for years and the first thing I did was install a generator and have the med supply folks bring oxygen backup tanks. Her family could and should have helped her long before it came down to her dying.
I was thinking it may be a family plot.
Allegedly?
Notice she wasn’t an “alleged” Grandma? It wasn’t that the company “allegedly” cut of the phone bill. No, it’s only “allegedly” that she didn’t pay her bill...
It creates oxygen by removing the nitrogen. It uses zircon. Under pressure it absorbs nitrogen. When the pressure gets to high it drops the pressure and the nitrogen goes back into the room. The oxygen level in the house does not really change.
LOL!
Well, I can vouch for two Texas Companies that won't cut off electricity to medical needs customers for failure to pay.
It's not a tank, it's a machine.
The correct term, here, is Oxygen Concentrator. Details on its operation at Wiki(hah hah)pedia.
And yes, they run on electricity. No, they don't work when the electricity is cut off. Yes, I know more than I want to know about home medical oxygen due to personal experience with a relative.
Now you know something your didn't know this morning.
OBTW, the relative's home is complete with a stand-by generator. And I make sure her utility bill is paid on time.
Thank you. Really interesting technology. I thought only legumes were able to take nitrogen out of the air! ;-)
Probably an oxygen concentrator. But if she was that reliant on oxygen, a tank is far more reliable.
Oxygen concentrators run on electricity but pure oxygen for those in critical condition use the bottled gas.
Almost certainly there would be a back up tank if the lights went out and an Oxygen Concentrator was not functioning.
This is a stupid scam.
I was thinking the same thing. There were alot of failures on the families end to get to this point.
We have one. An electric powered oxygen generator. We also have a engine powered portable generator, just in case.

Oxygen tank powered by electricity? Ive seen lots of them and none of them were electric powered.
There are machines that make oxygen powered by electricity.
OK, this stinks. First of all, I never heard of any oxygen equipment that needs power, but I’m no expert, so we’ll assume that’s legit. If the equipment is portable and the power isn’t back on in 30 minutes, haul her azz to McDonalds or somewhere and plug it in. If not, get her in an ambulance, urgent care, hospital, etc. etc, etc. There’s only about 54 places in your town that have oxygen and electricity. Nice job. Granny’s in heaven now, slapping her forehead over having such stupid progeny (come to think of it, if she’s coherent, why didn’t SHE call 911?)
Sometimes you see them advertised on TV. The battery powered versions weight about 6 lbs and can be carried like a handbag.
Did anyone think to dial 911?
The paramedics carry oxygen.
Did anyone think to call the local medical supply house. They could have delivered oxygen to the home.
Did anyone think of putting her in a car and driving her to the ER?
Loss of power created a crisis but there were several options available so she should not have died for lack of O2
“Oxygen tank powered by electricity?”
I’m sure it was an Oxygen Concentrator which does rely on Electricity. I just had a Health Equipment Rental Co. Pick up my Mom’s unit after she passed a couple weeks back.
