Rapper Snoop Dogg goes gospel at Essence Fest 2018 -- no lie

On the first day of Essence Fest 2018, Snoop Dogg created a gospel concert where there was none. And it was good. The multitudes that filled the Mercedes-Benz Superdome witnessed a performance that would have been unthinkable 25 years ago when Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. emerged on the California gangster rap scene.

For the first few songs on Friday (July 6) night, the braided and bespectacled Snoop touched on tried and true topics, such as the consumption of cannabis, mayhem and serial romance. Two scantily clad women added scintillating choreography to the songs. Snoop's mascot, a dude in a plush dog costume, skipped to the front of the stage. Everything seemed normal.

But it was not. After 20 minutes more or less, the 46-year-old tellingly sang a reggae tune titled "Tired of Running," then the whole tone of the concert was transformed. Snoop suddenly forsook hip-hop hedonism and turned to musical salvation.

Wearing an white jersey and pants that glowed angelically in the spotlights, Snoop shepherded one talented gospel singer after another to center stage. Backed by a small chorus and live band, the fiery Fred Hammond, powerhouse John P. Kee and the soulful Clark Sisters (plus one other) praised the Lord in song.

The churchy review was jaw-droppingly incongruous in the context of Snoop's typically debaucherous Dogg Pound persona, for those of us who were unaware of his recent gospel album "The Bible of Love" anyway.

Crosses and stained glass designs were projected at the rear of the stage. Brilliant silver spotlights shone down through theatrical fog like the light of heaven piercing the clouds of sin. As anyone in attendance will attest, it was a joyful, if unshakably ironic, concert within a concert. The impresario Snoop put smiles on thousands of faces Friday night.

“He has, for many decades, soiled the planet with his porn and vile lyrics.”

Yes. That’s one of the things that is so amazing about God. Any sin can be forgiven, if there is sincere repentance.

We already found Hope in Trump. Anything past that, you just need a friend called Jack Daniels.

How recent? During the concert?

Two scantily clad women added scintillating choreography to the songs.

Or a about month ago?

Snoop Dogg breaks Guinness World Record for largest gin and juice https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/entertainthis/.../snoop-dogg.../650560002/ May 29, 2018 -The drink contained 180 bottles of gin, 154 bottles of apricot brandy and 38 jugs of orange juice, according to Guinness. And it just wouldn't be a paradise cocktail without a pink umbrella and a giant straw, which Snoop used to mix up the boozy beverage.

Or after he made his "gospel" album?

Snoop Dogg made a gospel album, March 14, 2018 ‘Joker’s Wild’ host Snoop Dogg tells USA TODAY’s Bill Keveney about marijuana references and a question category featuring videos of mating animals – with some deleted expletives – in his remake of the classic game show for TBS. Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY

With Bible of Love, Snoop smartly reserves the album’s vocal duties for names including Faith Evans, Tye Tribbett, Rance Allen, B. Slade, Kim Burrell, Charlie Wilson and more. Snoop is more a curator than an artist on Bible of Love, and when he does drop in to sing a few verses, as he does on the album’s closing track, Words Are Few, he smartly defers to the gospel experts to carry the song. - http://www.cbelmira.com/blog/snoop-dogg-made-a-gospel-album-and-its-actually-wonderful/

I do not see any real testimony to Biblical regeneration by faith out of a poor and contrite repentant heart.

Unless my study of Th Bible was misread, Only God Almighty is to make that judgment of the state of ones relationship with him

Maybe you are wandering into repentance, cannot tell but yet again God says “Judge not, lest Ye be Judged”

His turf, not yours

Yo can have discernment but judgment. No

2 Peter 3:9 New International Version
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Physician heal thyself. It is you who stated he had a "recent conversion" and "I don’t think this is an act", while Scripture states that "Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them,"(Matthew 7:20) and thus Hebrews states that "beloved, we are persuaded better things of you, and things that accompany salvation," (Hebrews 6:9) in contrast to those whose life evidences the contrary, and likewise based upon their evident response of the Thessalonians, "how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God" Paul stated "Knowing, brethren beloved, your election of God. (1 Thessalonians 1:4,9)

And 1 John 5:13 teaches one can know that they presently posses eternal life based upon their characteristics, and that contrariwise one has denied the faith by such basic disobedience as not providing for his own, (1Tim. 5:8) and impenitently sinning will-fully, (Heb. 10:25-39) and thus Paul hands a professed believer over to the devil in order to effect repentance unto salvation. (1 Co. 5:5)

It is true that we may not know now what the eternal end will be of souls, since they may come to faith or fall away, but that we can know one is a saved believer is Scriptural, and which was the issue in my response, and not how Snoop may end up. But he quite evidentially needs true conversion.

As Christians we are responsible for calling out the tares among us. Paul had no problem in criticizing the Corinthians for allowing people in the church who should not have been there and did not hesitate to throw them out. Neither did Peter, James or John. If Rapper Snoop Dogg is a truly repentant sinner, he will demonstrate this over the course of time in both words and deeds. His faith will be evidence in his works. I've been around the block enough to have seen these types of people come and go. I remain skeptical.

The problem with today's church is there are too many tares and not enough wheat.

Note that only in the beginning of his performance he worked in his old style, then sang a song as a bridge to his new life “Tired of Running” and then the vast majority of it was gospel

God is all about transformation, consider David and all of his crimes yet when he turned away and took his lumps God called him a man after his own heart.

I am not in any way condoning his past behaviors, nor am I judging him. Discernment is another issue an I do not follow him or listen to his older music. I am cautiously optimistic that he like many others is awakening and realizing the error of his past and taking a new path in his life

I will pray for him as I do many others that the Holy Spirit will work on him and bring him home to the Lord

Amen My Brother

Amen

That is simply apologetical special pleading, and is akin to Paul killing some Christians and then preaching gospel love, in order to show his bridge to his new life.

I am not in any way condoning his past behaviors, nor am I judging him.

Which is another logical fallacy, for not condoning his past behaviors is judging him as acting immoral.
