SAN FRANCISCO Growing up in eastern China, Panshu Zhao fell in love with America. He read the Bible his parents gave him, watched Hollywood movies and studied the ideals of democracy. He jumped at the chance to attend graduate school at Texas A&M University.
In 2016, Zhao enlisted in the U.S. Army as part of a special recruitment program offering immigrants in the country legally a path to citizenship.
The future, he said, was bright.
Now, he is one of the dozens of immigrant recruits and reservists struggling with abrupt, often unexplained military discharges and canceled contracts. They traded being willing to risk their lives for the prospect of U.S. citizenship, a timeworn exchange that's drawn linguists, medical specialists and thousands of other immigrants to the military since the Revolutionary War.
"It's just like you're dropped from heaven to hell," Zhao told The Associated Press on Friday.
It is unclear how many men and women who enlisted through the special recruitment program have been ousted from the Army, but immigration attorneys told the AP that they know of more than 40 recruits who recently have been discharged or whose status has become questionable.
Some recruits say they were given no reason for their discharge. Others said the Army informed them they'd been labeled as security risks because they have relatives abroad or because the Defense Department had not completed background checks on them.
The Pentagon said Friday that there has been no policy change since last year, when Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said no one could enter basic training without completion of a background investigation.
And Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith said that any enlistee entering the military undergoes security screenings.

I served with a lot of immigrants and the vast majority of them were good Marines.
This guy and others did have a contract. A contract should mean something.
A Pakistani that grew up in China probably speaks 3 languages and he is pursuing a PhD in geography. He should not have trouble in the private sector. I hope him the best.

We had an Iranian that could not deploy with us. He had been a lieutenant in the IRIAF. He had two death sentences . One for desertion and one for apostasy. His story about getting out of Iran was interesting.

1) He was “DEP”, never completed BCT or actually served therefore the “misnomer” of Enlisted is being played fast and loose with here.
2) He cannot pass a Background Check and is treated as every other individual who cannot and not allowed to Serve.
3) The attempt in 2014 to tie DREAMERS into this program under the Obama Administration was successful therefore the previous administration is responsible for forcing thiese 40 out of 17,000 in the past two years to not complete their plan to enlist.
Just the latest distraction from the Russia/Separation/SCOTUS/etc. Crisis string. Never having Resolution is designed so that this Administration cannot continue it’s successes, because that would set Rinos&Rats up to fail in the Fall.
Think about a city having enough soldiers to control the land and seas they controlled. Then they spread and made more citizens. More soldiers. They had to give them land in most cases especially after significant victories.
By the 4th century they were paying off mercenaries to control the outer regions especially in north and eastern europe. That money couldn’t hold forever. Also more population in Germany and other places. The fall was inevitable.
One way t understand the fall is to look at europe today. If 5 countries with armies aligned against Italy could they control all of europe?

I was an immigrant with an Alien Registration Card AKA a green card and enlisted during Nam but back then we were thoroughly vetted BEFORE we were accepted to immigrate...BEFORE we ever entered the country...we were already qualified to serve in the military...
Male immigrants were eligible to be drafted and were...many of them...
these are probably people that Obama let in who were not really eligible to immigrate at all...let alone serve..
now when they try to enlist they cant pass the security clearance requirements or they did enlist before 2017 and now they have gotten caught as ineligible..for a security clearance and probably to even be in our country...
The US gov goes back to the original country for info for those sec clearances...double checks all info given by the immigrant..all my info was rechecked when I entered the military...I almost got held over at Lackland ...
actually I ended up with a secret clearance...
Hopefully these Obama “immigrants” will be deported...
BTW you notice none of these “immigrants” appear to be from a Western country...no Aussies, no Brits, No NZers...
Some may not be willing spies.Some may be approached by Chinese officials and told "get us the info we want...we know where your parents/grandparents live".
They are counseled by the Govt when they leave and given
a choice and are updated regularly .
All the US University systems are neck deep in Chinese spies .
