As I wrote elsewhere, Frank Zappa’s comment - whatever you can do to have a good time, let’s get on with it, so long as it doesn’t cause a murder - isn’t too bad a way to think about things IN GENERAL. Yes, violating property and initiating fraud are crimes and should not be tolerated. And if you’re dressing up like a rodent in the privacy of your own home, that’s your business, just like I don’t want the government crashing through my front door looking for Gadsden flags.
But this kind of thing goes both ways: you can fly your freak flag in public, but that same right you’re exercising also permits others to call you a freak.

I agree that people should feel free to express themselves in whatever way they like that is harmless to others; and if you want to run for office, you leave yourself open to the judgment of others as to your wisdom.
In recent months we’ve seen a lot of people who, by exercising their rights, are winnowing themselves out of the consideration of the vast majority of mainstream voters.
