A huge amount of "UFO" videos were posted to YouTube this weekend regarding an object seen in the morning twilight skies over Florida on Friday morning. Popular UFO channels like Third Phase of the Moon reported it as a UFO incident. The real cause? A SpaceX launch of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Dragon capsule to orbit to deliver cargo and supplies to the International Space Station for CRS-15.
Despite some who think that "SpaceX is FakeX" and that all of spaceflight is a hoax (including a number of Freepers), the real hoax is the belief that this was a UFO and that the SpaceX launch was invented after the fact as an excuse. Third Phase himself tries to make this argument, claiming the launch was not announced ahead of time. Of course it was, which is why I drove out there that morning with my equipment to track the launch from the moment it came off the pad to the moment the second stage shut down occurred.

I knew this launch would cause a ruckus because of its timing; as the vehicle ascended past about 100 km altitude, it reached line of sight to the sun (thanks to the fact that earth is round, again in contradiction to certain freeper beliefs) illuminating the rocket and its exhaust against the dark background of the twilight sky. This is what caused the brilliant display and why the rocket suddenly increased in brightness dramatically towards the end of the first stage burn.

Keep in mind this is just what I happen to find in my encounters and I’m not even here very often. You are another one who hates on SpaceX because you find it politically expedient, even if you don’t go as far as publicly accusing them of hoaxing their launches.

All because you disagree with the politics of its CEO, even though that has nothing to do with the fact that they are successfully lowering the cost of launches through innovative methods of re-use and free market competition. You were pissed they won a contract to launch an air force satellite even though that same launch would normally cost several times as much if it had been launched on the next most powerful (and expendable) rocket available. You’ve blinded yourself to reality for the sake of political expediency, that’s a mistake we should leave to the left to make.

And yet, it will always be like that. If there is one thing the history of science can teach us, it is that when man is wrong about a theory it can take many, many years to overturn it. The Geocentric theory got around 2000 years of defense until the overthrow by Galileo, Kepler, and Copernicus.
So, for those of us that like accurate science, we are sometimes in for a wait to have nonsense removed. I am just not sure how long we will have to wait on man-made global warming, long-earth, and evolution theory to get out of the way.
And here we are in the year 2018 and we still have people believing that the Earth is flat. The problem with these people, just as with the geocentrists before them, is that they deny the evidence proving them wrong when it is given to them.
I think most of these people will go to their graves continuing to believe that they were right. Science is not the problem. Willful ignorance is the issue. It needs to be shamed and destroyed by continuous ridicule. Flat earthers need to be evicted from Free Republic. They are a disgrace to this forum.
You could literally round up a half dozen of these crazies, put them on a rocket, launch them into space and return them to earth, they would be convinced it was all just an elaborate illusion.

None of these round earthers have ever been able to answer that question satisfactorily.
I must admit, flat earth belief is incredibly bad since simply walking to a shore line can reveal the curved horizon. I am not sure banning them would be true to how we operate here. Given a capitalist approach, I would think allowing the posts, but seeing that no comments/attention given to them would be more apt?
As it stands, even early Christians new the earth to be a spherical object. Benedictus Arias Montanus translation, printed in 1528, used ‘globus’ for Isaiah 40:22. Oh, and you can also remind flat earthers of Job 26:7, that God “hangs the earth on nothing” instead of physical pillars.
But early Christian beliefs haven’t stopped Preterism. The Bible even recounts the first preterists as heretics - yet they exist on today (2 Timothy 2:17–18). I doubt it will stop flat earthers.
Actually, it’s a dodecahedron, and it’s been used as a die by cosmic dungeon masters in a macro game of Dungeons and Dragons.

I disagree, I see it as no different than banning libtards, racists, and other extremists. If Free Republic simply allows anti-scientific ignorant posters to ruin the reputation of conservatives by playing right into libtard stereotypes then we will lose our identity as conservatives and undermine our own efforts. We wouldn’t allow that to happen on other matters, say someone outwardly professing to be conservative who also rants about “the jews” being the cause of every ill in the world.
