Utah Sen. Mike Lee voted for McMullin in protest of Trump (2016)

Utah Sen. Mike Lee, who is on Donald Trump's lengthy short list for Supreme Court nominees, revealed Wednesday that he voted for independent presidential candidate Evan McMullin.

"It was a protest vote," he told an audience at the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute in Salt Lake City, acknowledging he didn't know McMullin well, or much about him.

"I had signaled in the past concerns that I had with my party's nominee. I've made no secret about that and I don't feel any desire to rehearse those now.… I saw in Evan McMullin an opportunity to register a protest vote."

Lee previously has said he would not vote for Trump, but until Wednesday declined to say who would get his vote.

McMullin finished third in Utah, behind Trump and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

My opinion of Lee has been declining since before the election. He WAS considered a constitutional conservative, but I have yet to hear from Lee a constitutionally-based objection to Trump.

I hope Sen. Lee understands that if more people like him voted in “protest” for someone other than the eventual winner, he wouldn’t be on the present short list.

“Not for nothing, but it’d be hard for the media to say that he’d be some rubber stamp for Trump’s agenda if he didn’t vote for Trump and they don’t even really like each other.”

THIS is the whole point of the information being made public.

Lee’s stock just went up.

“One person close to Trump said the president will be reminded that Lee was one of a very small cluster of Republican senators who never endorsed Trump for president and in October 2016 called for him to step down.”

Trump clearly knew this before he added Lee to the list. Trump wants to get things done, and as quickly and efficiently as possible. Immigration going nowhere, Trump recognized it was time to move on to other things and come back when progress can be made. Here, Trump is considering that a fellow Senator will have a clearer path through the process - and in the end he will have a constitutionalist in line with Scalia - exactly what Trump wants. Yes - Lee, like others, acted badly. He has since been a pretty reliable Trump vote on the issues. Let’s all grow up and recognize, like Trump does, that moving on is better for the country than dwelling on past errors.

From another article:
“I have a good relationship with the president. He and I don’t see eye to eye on every issue,” Lee said in a Fox News interview on Thursday. “He and I see eye to eye on most things when it comes to the Supreme Court of the United States.” https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-06-28/trump-is-said-to-weigh-senator-mike-lee-for-high-court-vacancy

“These “real” conservatives have achieved close to zero in congress. But they consider themselves “principled” conservatives. “

The “principled conservative” senators won’t even speak up about all the bad stuff going on against Trump and all the rabble rousing. They should be screaming bloody murder about Maxine Waters considering the near-slaughter at the baseball field last year. They are a little better than worthless. At least Rand Paul still wants to do something about health care.

Buffoons like Lee are the reason the Trump campaign hired Manafort. So not only no to his nomination, but “Hell no!”

“What’s to prevent this guy from future “protest votes” from the SC bench, if seated?”

And what if he rules “pro-illegal immigration or amnesty” because of the Mormon Church desire for more Hispanic immigrants?

Senator Lee was rooting for his buddy Lying Ted. That was the reason he has been anti-Trump.

Maybe.

Another possibility is that he, along with fellow Mormons Jason Chaffetz and Utah governor Herbert, with their vocal opposition to Trump were aiming toward Romney being anointed as the consensus compromise candidate.

Timing of Mike Lee revealing his vote for Evan McMuffin is interesting to say the least. Why now?

Maybe Lee thinks this revelation will shore up his ‘principled conservative’ cred, that would be my guess.

Just in case Trump is ever considering him, that is Mike’s way of saying he will be a principled conservative vote on the SC bench.

He was a never Trump idiot during the primaries.

Worse than that, he was a never-Trump idiot AFTER the primaries. Only a month out from the general election, Lee put out a video pleading for Trump to step down as the nominee.

With what we're finding out about just how pervasive the corruption is in the intelligence agencies, it's frightening to think that none of that would have been exposed with a Hillary election. Mike Lee did everything he could to get Hillary elected by his "principled" stand against the Republican nominee.

I live in an area of New York city that has a large Hispanic population, and there are Mormon missionaries here.

...and Flakey would love to torpedo Trump in his last year. Hard to do that with a fellow Mormon.

So Trump should make a pick with the intent to pander to the Mormons?

If Flake would be the one vote deciding factor on a Trump SC nominee failing to be confirmed, he'd better have some good security hired, because there are a lot of people in the country that wouldn't be too happy about it.

Harry Reid all by himself destroyed the credibility of the Mormon religion .. Lee is no different in theology than Harry Reid... We literally have to ‘profile’ these egos.
