The male passenger, now identified as Russian rock musician Andrey Suchilin, allegedly smelled so strongly that others on the flight began fainting and vomiting once the plane took off from Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. Several passengers said the smell was “unbearable” and the man was “unwashed.”

The 58-year-old reportedly had contracted an infection while on vacation in the Canary Islands that caused his body tissue to die, resulting in the odor.

As Daily Mail reported, Suchilin caught the infection in Gran Canaria. Suchilin’s wife, Lidia, wrote on Facebook, Newsweek reported, that her husband had sought medical attention before leaving Spain, but was told it was just an “ordinary beach infection” and given antibiotics. His condition worsened on the flight to Amsterdam.

wonder how those passengers who complained feel now, this "smelly " passenger actually dying...

the smell of rotting flesh is not pleasant...try being a nurse in a hospital....but I feel they treated this passenger dis respectively...

they allow smelly dogs and pigs on planes but smelly humans are a no go...

Necrosis—the death and decay of body tissue—is just about the worst thing that can happen to a person, at least if it's not isolated.

It's what happened to Bo Jackson's hip tissue after a severe injury caused by a violent sideline tackle, ultimately forcing his retirement from the NFL...

I would suspect flesh eating bacteria. Even with modern medical care, death is common. Poor guy.

It was. He was in the Canaries. Probably bacteria in the ocean water infected a cut. Parts of Florida has warnings about dangerous bacteria in the water right now. It happens.

He must have been awfully sick.

Apparently the smell was causing other passengers to vomit and faint - this is a very sad case, but a passenger whose smell causes illness in others near him can't be allowed to remain in a plane.

Its hard to get those doors open at 35,000 feet.

Probably smelled like a decaying squirrel carcass on a street. There was one on our street, smelled sickening every time I drove past.

Since I read that post in a hurry and thought it said, “squirrel cannon,” it’s only right that I should tag 1_Inch_Group.

Because, what is a squirrel cannon anyway?

These infections can spread quickly if you have diabetes, HIV or other medical problems.
That might be why they did not notice the odor when he boarded the plane.
He should have sought local medical care, but didn't realize the infection was serious.

Realizing the unsanitary condition of many commercial aircraft interiors, what level of risk did the neighboring passengers experience?

“These infections can spread quickly “

THAT quickly? C’mon man, he had to stink BEFORE he got on the plane.

How could they let him on the plane.

How do those people feel now? PISSED! That some guy with ROTTING FLESH BACTERIA was allowed on their airplane!

“Excuse me, I’m dying from a ROTTING FLESH BACTERIA, can I have that window seat next to you?”

“Oh, I’m sorry my nose fell in your drink.”

he did seek medical care and was given antibiotic -the doctors didn’t think it was so bad. You can read it in the excerpt part at the top, in the post.

I responded to many medical calls with unbelievably bad smelling patients. The infection probably was contained by his skin when he got on the plane but throwing luggage around or some other activity probably caused a rupture or fluids to start leaking out of a break in his skin.
