Can’t have an Anglo playing a Mexican. It violates all the liberal casting rules.

Jews played Mexicans frequently in "old Hollywood"

An hilarious memory: Eli seated outside Zabar’s on Broadway, selling his book!

You've met him? I'm envious.

Yes. He played an absolutely convincing Mexican. He was awesome.

Last year I was looking up information about "The good, the bad and the Ugly", and that scene in the gun store where Tuco was testing guns and swapping parts like he was an expert. He improvised all of it on the spur of the moment.

The opening credits/intro of Josey Wales is more entertaining than some entire movies.

The first 10 minutes of the outlaw Josey Wales is a movie in itself. Wales' farm gets sacked by red legs that kill his wife and son. He survives and buries them. Depressed he finds his guns and drinks and shoots to pass the time ( I guess until he kill himself?). In his despair Bloody Bill Anderson finds him and takes him on a raid in Kansas "to set things right". Battle and guerrilla warfare until the end when they just have to ride into the union camp and pledge allegiance.

That is enough plot for an entire movie! This is just the first 10 minutes!

Never knew Wallach was a veteran. If you go to the Philadelphia Independence National Park center and Liberty Bell exhibit, there are three well-done films that take you back to the history of 1776 and the forming of our country.

In one of those films Wallach plays Benjamin Franklin. And it's a memorable performance.

And I'll never forget the Franklin quote that Wallach delivered after the Constitution was signed:

"You've got a country.... if you can keep it."

And that refers to the words James Madison relayed:

In these sentiments, Sir, I agree to this Constitution, with all its faults, — if they are such; because I think a general Government necessary for us, and there is no form of government but what may be a blessing to the people, if well administered; and I believe, farther, that this is likely to be well administered for a course of years, and can only end in despotism, as other forms have done before it, when the people shall become so corrupted as to need despotic government, being incapable of any other.

Speech to the Constitutional Convention (September 17, 1787); reported in James Madison, Journal of the Federal Convention, ed. E. H. Scott (1893), p. 742.

I didn’t see it as a semi-suicidal montage. To me, it looks like he’s dusted off his guns and is fixing to get down to the business of getting even.

Agreed. Like in “Unforgiven” -where the scene is a hat-tip to Josey. He gives up on the pistol in disgust and heads back into the cabin.

Comes out with a shotgun and blows the can and the fence post all to heck.

“But I ain’t like that no more.”

True. Probably a little of both.
