The Kremlin has in recent years advanced a narrative that Russia must not be ashamed of its Soviet past. President Vladimir Putin has used his nearly two decades in power to talk up achievements during World War II as a rallying cry to unite the nation.
In recent years, there have been efforts in Russia to transform Stalins image from that of a bloody dictator to a great personality.
A poll by the independent Levada Center found only 9 percent of Russians blamed Stalins leadership for the war casualties, according to a survey published Wednesday.
That is a a rapidly dwindling fourfold decline from the 36 percent of respondents who believed in 1991.

You can’t polish a turd.
WWII deaths?
Or the millions that perished in the 1930s?
Bloody dictator.
You mean somehow these people UNKILLED all the people he killed??? How does that work??
Stalin was a great personality... if you happen to idolize bloody dictators.
I guess he meant well. So it’s OK.
(The only problem is: he didn’t mean well.)
The Kulaks would beg to differ. If there are any left.
I’ve always read that the Russians like to be dictated. They must be easy to fool.
You cant polish a turd. .................................... Ahhhh, but you can rewrite history. Fighting a war is a military thing, forcing people to work to death in the frozen Archipelago mines under the guise of patriotism is BS. Randomly picking up people off the streets for false crimes isn’t part of the war. The Nazis invaded the USSR, it was a Patriotic War for the Russians, the appointment of the General Officers and the muscle behind them was Stalin. In that sense he was a great war leader. By putting millions of so called criminals of the state to death, he was a mass murderer like Hitler, who some consider the greatest politician Germany ever had. Lots of turds get polished, wait a hundred years, #44 will probably be the leader of the golden age of America.
It’s good.
The heavy loss was inevitable, unless Stalin ordered to take the preemptive action attacking Germany.
Should Americans hold FDR liable for the loss in Pearl Harbor?
How has Churchill fared in the ‘polls’ over the past few decades?
Wouldn’t it be ironic if Stalin was more popular in Russia today than Churchill is in Britain?
Exactly. The Moscow Times is deflecting attention from the elephant in the room.
Russians pretty much feel the same way about Ivan the Terrible, who was Stalin’s idol.
It’s great that Russians stop self-loathing and reject the smear propaganda.
That will never happen...the American FDR myth like the JFK myth are quite safe.
No need to mention the images of Margaret Thatcher,Reagan and Andrew Jackson.
Thatcher is reviled in Britain, but I think Reagan is still held in high regard in the United States.
The outpouring of genuine affection when he passed away was palpable.
Stalin and his ALLY Adolf Hitler colluded to attack Poland.
Stalin DID NOT attack Hitler first.
After Poland, Stalin occupied the Baltics and invaded Finland. He was every bit the aggressor that Hitler was.
