How party dips can give you Norovirus and even HERPES (and sour cream is the worst for spreading bacteria)
Microbiologists reveal double dipping can spread bacteria very quickly
Even a small amount of someone's saliva in a dip will allow germs to multiply
Bacteria in runny dips like sour cream will multiply by up to 100 times
But it won't grow very quickly in thicker dips such as houmous, it's said
It's not a party unless there are some chips and dip on the table, but these tasty nibbles could be hiding some very dangerous bacteria, an investigation reveals.
Norovirus, streptococcus - which gives you a sore throat - and herpes simplex - the cold sore virus - could all be lurking in your favourite sauces if just one party-goer has committed the ultimate party faux pas of double dipping: the act of putting the same crisp or crudité back in a dip after taking a bite.
Microbiologists revealed on Monday's episode of Food Unwrapped on Channel 4 that thousands of organisms live in the tiniest amount of saliva, so when someone double dips, the bacteria can transfer and multiply.
They also revealed which dips are the worst for harbouring dangerous viruses: and it's bad news if you're a fan of sour cream.
The experts revealed that bacteria can grow especially rapidly at parties because dips are usually left out of the fridge for a few hours.
The viruses can multiply quickly in warm conditions, making them hot beds of contamination.
A test of three popular dips - taramasalata, houmous, and sour cream - revealed that the runnier the sauce, the easier it is for bacteria to grow and multiply.
In laboratory conditions, co-presenter Matt Tebbutt douple dipped a crisp into all three dips to see where the bacteria would grow most

Step 1) Obtain a bunch of douche-bag friends.
When we put out a big spread(buffet style dinner)our dip bowl had a spoon where you used it to put the dip on your plate then eat with chips.
Still, doubt many people got herpes from ‘double dipping.
What kind of people are you inviting to your house? Hugh Hefner?
Easily solved.
Don’t eat the dip.....................
” However, about half of teens and adults under age 50 are still infected with the oral herpes virus, and about 1 in 8 have an infection with the genital herpes virus.”
People are still pretty gross. Choose your friends wisely.
...and girls, you can get pregnant from swimming in the same pool with boys!
“That’s like putting your whole mouth right in the dip. Look, from now on when you take a chip, just take one dip and end it.”
LOL, first thing I thought of.
Simple solution. Very nice.
The reason I had to post this article!
The only way while the chip is big enough that you won't drag fingers holding the chip thru the dip because the chip is so small. Of course everyone washes their hands before eating chip-n-dip.
Where would we be without “Seinfeld” to educate us on stuff like this?

Does double-dipping really spread germs?
Finding: BUSTED
Explanation: This myth gathered steam after a Seinfeld episode aired in which George was caught in the socially unacceptable act of double-dipping. The theory here is that double-dipping placing a chip in dip, biting off the chip and then placing it again into the dip spreads as much bacteria in the dip as if you'd stuck your whole mouth in the bowl. So, MythBusters Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman set out on a bacteria-finding mission with somewhat surprising results.
By testing bacterial growth in petri dishes using sterilized chips and a salsa-like substance, they found that double-dipping adds just a small amount of bacteria to the salsa, and definitely not as much as sticking your mouth in the bowl.
The truth is that most dips store-bought or homemade already contain bacteria. Double-dipping adds only a few more microbes than the multitude swimming in your salsa to begin with.
So, if you want your dip to stay totally bacteria-free, it looks like you're out of luck. But if you want to keep your germs to yourself, your best bet is to just eat out of your own private bowl.
OMG the dangerous bacteria Norovirus!!! Seriously.
LOL Funny Seinfeld was my first thought when I read this too.
Well, that’s one good thing about being on the down hill side.
I just made a small bowl of homemade dip and homemade potato chips. Ate them all by myself. I think I’ll keep to that practice.
Came in from the grocery store yesterday and washed my hands well before and after putting away the food. People are just so gross and there’s more and more germs out there.
How many times was that dip double dipped? Once or a couple dozen or so times? People don’t just double dip once. Have each person double dip a dozen times and put their dirty hands in the chips a couple times throughout the party and then test for germs.
Exactly. Post #1. I learned this on Seinfeld.
...and They Laugh at Seinfeld!!!
