Tesla released its first-quarter earnings report on Wednesday, and hinted at when the $35,000 base model of its Model 3 sedan will become available.
In the report, Tesla said it expects to start making around 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week "in about two months," so around July. After the company reaches that threshold, it said it will make new options available to Model 3 customers. "After achieving a production rate of 5,000 per week, we will begin offering new options such as all-wheel-drive and the base model with a standard-sized battery pack," the company said.
Tesla states on its website that it would roll out the option for the standard battery Model 3 in late 2018, but it was unclear when the company would actually begin production given the delays.
The Model 3, which launched in July, is touted as a more affordable alternative to Tesla's high-end sedan, the Model S, with a $35,000 base price that would make it competitive with mass-market electric vehicles like the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. But customers who have the option to configure their Model 3 can only purchase the long-range version with rear-wheel drive, which starts at $49,000.
In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company would likely start producing the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive, version of the Model 3 in July. Musk was responding to a Twitter user who claimed his Model 3 "has been sitting in the configuration for months waiting on" the dual-motor option and asked when Tesla would start producing it.
Tesla had planned to make 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by the end of 2017 when it launched the vehicle in July, but it adjusted that goal after making just 2,425 Model 3s during the fourth quarter.

Give me a ‘68 GTX with a hemi any day.
Nah it aint gonna happen
Mask who has only produced software under deadline does not understand stand manufacturing. He sent an email to everyone saying there are two weeks left to meet that goal. He promised to be there 24/7. He demanded that radical improvement happen in the next two weeks. He is the jerk boss that everyone rolls their eyes at. Radical improvement never happens in two weeks. Plenty of reports over the last year have detailed various manufacturing failures of this car. Musk refuses to listen and skips on to his next project
Someone ought to give him some heavy sedatives and keep him locked away for awhile. That might help more than anything
Price doesnt include $10000 worth of new batteries after ~7 years (or sooner if the millage fall affects its utitility to the driver)
BEWARE OF BUYING A *USED* ELECTRIC CAR
“10.41 in the quarter mile is not boring!”
That’s for only one $125,000 version.
The usual $75,000 doesn’t go that fast.
And how many gas powered cars are on the road? How many Teslas?
Shall we discuss self driving cars now?
“Tesla buyers also get a $7,500 federal income tax credit and a $2,500 rebate from the state of California. “
Sucks. I’m pretty sure the governments don’t give subsidies for the products I sell.
Do you own stock on a Tesla? Are you driving one of their cars?
Tesla will sell every last one of them.
Battery-powered cars are here to stay. They're the future.
Elon is that you?
Good Lord you are so full of midinformation
Why are you so protective of Tesla? Most of what you say has zero to do with the missed manufacturing goals
“Does the $35,000 include a fire extinguisher?”
You beat me to it. I was going to ask if the flame-on feature is an accessory or comes with all base models.
“Battery-powered cars are here to stay. They’re the future. “
That was said in the 19230’s too. Didn’t happen. Too expensive and inconvenient.
“Over 200,000 gas powered cars self-ignite each year in the US! this is a much higher rate than for electric cars.”
Is it??
253 million gas vehicles on the road, 200k fires = 0.09%.
Tesla just announce their 300,000 vehicle made. That would only allow 300 vehicle fires.
“...the future.” That is only if proto-fascists force them upon everyone. (Is that you, elon?)
Had one behind me today. Very cheap and pedestrian looking, IMHO.
another ‘Boring’ development..
How Musk dug Wall Street investors a new one..
Revenge of the Mole People?
I forgot to ask. Do you carry a fire extinguisher in you rolling bomb?
A fire extinguisher would be useless in my car to extinguish a fire involving the car. If it caught fire I am going to get out and run as fast as I can to a safe distance and watch it burn. The instant it catches fire the car would be totaled anyways.
Since when is snarkn prohibited? Do we need to see your list of things forbidden to criticize?
I thought the Tesla 3s were already out? I’ve seen quite a few of them in recent weeks - on the other hand, I work not too far from the Tesla corporate headquarters in Palo Alto and maybe I’ve been seeing pre-release cars?
The Tesla's appear to be a fine cars if you can afford one. But some of the things I'm reading and hearing coming out of Elon’s mouth recently sound more and more desperate. A LOT of Tesla's stock is being shorted.
