Its been almost three weeks since ABCs abrupt cancellation of its flagship comedy series Roseanne following a controversial tweet by star and executive producer Roseanne Barr. And while there is still no official decision on a potential spinoff series, a lot of leg work has been done behind the scenes.
I hear Barr is expected to sign an agreement that would remove her from the potential spinoff and prevent her from suing over it. Terms of the agreements are unclear but it may involve a one-time payment from production company Carsey-Werner to Barr in exchange of her relinquishing any rights so she wont be entitled to any profits from the spinoff.
Because of the circumstances under which ABC canceled the Roseanne revival, the networks executives have been adamant that they would only proceed with a spinoff series if Barr has absolutely no involvement creative, financial or any other.
I hear, barring any last-minute change of mind by Barr which would not be completely out of character her agreement is expected to be signed soon. I hear ABC has seven days after that to make a decision on a pickup.
With its conditions of no Barr involvement in the new series met, I hear ABC is likely to proceed with the spinoff. The network and the producers already had been brainstorming titles with several contenders in play. While Darlene was a moniker that had been circulated early on when rumors first surfaced about a possible new series centered on the character played by co-star/executive producer Sara Gilbert, I hear another name that is under consideration is The Conners, which would keep the strong ties to the original series without any Roseanne references while also underscoring the shows family and ensemble nature.
As this is considered a new series, I hear the cast and the writers all have closed or are in final stages of negotiations on new contracts for the proposed spinoff to replace the deals they had in place for Season 2 of the revival. That doesnt necessarily mean different terms; I hear the established stars of the show will likely remain at the previously renegotiated salaries for next season, reported to be around $300,000 an episode, though I hear the new pacts are for one year vs. the previous two-year length. I hear there have been some pay increases for the writing staff that are coming back.
This all is part of an intricate business translation which involves calculating the cost of ABCs cancellation of Roseanne and the price of a possible spinoff and rolling one into the other. It is being handled by Carsey-Werner, which recently ramped up operations as it had not served as a studio on a series in more than a decade, since the end of That 70s Show.
In anticipation of a pickup for the spinoff, ABC continues to hold off on announcing a replacement for Roseanne on its fall schedule.
In another positive sign, Barr who, at times has been combative on Twitter in the weeks after the Roseanne cancellation, has adopted a mostly conciliatory tone in the last day or so. This is what she tweeted earlier today:
Roseanne Barr ✔ @therealroseanne I forgive everyone who hurt me. I forgive as fast as I can everyday. That is why I am able to live free. I want the best for everyone-I want no more racism or anti semitism or classism. I want peace! Let's all move on & help FREEDOM!
I hope Barr makes it mutual, requires that they cannot kill off her character, and allows her to create a new “Roseanne” elsewhere.
Meh. I’m sorry she lost her show for speaking her mind, but I’m not sure the show without her will manage.
Didn’t they kill Dan off at one point, and needed to make it all ‘like a dream’ (’Dallas’) at the beginning of the new ‘revival’ episode?
Now they have to kill of Roseanne? Not sure if people will tune in. I haven’t watched any of the ‘new’ show in Prime Time, but caught the first few episodes on bootlegged You-Tube videos.
Again, Meh. I’ve got other things to worry about, LOL! :)
I still believe this is all ‘arranged’ in some way by Roseanne, and she ends up with Fox by July, and has full ownership of the concept. As for the ‘others’ with their spinoff....by the fifth week, they will have lost half of their viewers, and it’ll quietly end by May of 2019.
Will Trump voters keep watching? I don’t know. Maybe they’ll replace their audience with liberal viewers. I have little interest.
Maybe I just don't think outside the box, but that doesn't seem like a winning formula.
Not. Watching.
Dead before it starts. “Roseanne” without Roseanne is like a day without ... day.
I hope it fails.
The media will pretend that there was never a show called Roseanne. Our job after the first episode airs is to flood ABC with phone calls an emails asking what happened to Roseanne.
So for grins and giggles, lets make a list of things that could have happened to her. Sure, Ill start.
1. She ran away and joined the circus.
I worked in this industry as a story analyst, production, development. My guess is the studio wanted to get the money train going, then can Roseanne. She will get a payout, but will never get another deal. She took the I like Trump much further than they bargained for. Probably get two years with a Lefty suck fest, called The Conners or something...,not Darlene. Goodman is a good draw, that Darlene is not. Then the show will get yanked. More and more cutting the cable....getting rid of tv. Wish I could bet on this.....
They should airbrush her out of the episodes from her first series and rename “Typikal Amerikan Family”
2. She crossed Hillary Clinton’s path to the White House
I hope Barr makes it mutual, requires that they cannot kill off her character, and allows her to create a new Roseanne elsewhere.
^^THAT^^
She will hopefully NEVER give up her rights, as creator of the character/series, to prevent her from moving on to another series, taking her character/story line with her.
She could call it, “I Love Roseanne”
;-)
2. Roseanne won the lottery, again...only...this time she gets to keep ALL of her winnings, since her crappy family dumped her/threw her under the bus....and, she’s now living in DC....working as a consultant for a Presidential campaign.
Her loser family members call her, from time to time, to beg for money....but, she has instructed her assistant to please ignore all of these phone calls.
Watch any “black” TV show and you’ll see every character as a black sterotype (sp?). The same goes for gays. And on lots of shows Trump is constantly bashed and some of it is racist. So it’s obvious this had nothing to do with racism. It’s all completely political.
Roseanne should take a multi-million-dollar payout to permit the spinoff, watch the spinoff fail, and laugh her way to the bank.
The audience was already dropping off after they went full gender derangement.
Good plan.
