Across their 43 seasons, the Washington Capitals have dabbled in hapless hockey and exquisite hockey, boring hockey and effective hockey, but never had they played winning hockey through four playoff rounds, all the way to a grueling, glorious end.
It took a team hardened by those postseason lures but liberated from high expectations to complete a run as dazzling as it was cathartic, capping it on Thursday night by dispatching the upstart Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3, to win the first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
It was the Capitals fourth consecutive victory in the finals after a disorienting 6-4 loss in the opener that made little sense in the context of how they played immediately before and afterward. After twice shutting out the offensive powerhouse Tampa Bay Lightning to advance to its first Cup finals since 1998, Washington outscored the Golden Knights across these last four games.
The Capitals overwhelmed Vegas with the same elements that propelled them past Columbus, their nemesis Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay: stifling neutral-zone defense, superb goaltending by Braden Holtby and waves of prolific talent headlined by the superstar scorer Alex Ovechkin, who will no longer be labeled the best player never to win a Cup.

I dont know enough about lacrosse. Too bad they watered it down for girls, but we will still have to check it out. She kind of wanted to play soccer but a) it really bores me and b) too much hot sun. So she does swimming and ice skating so far... lol.
I canceled cable 2+ years ago and agree - it frees up time and saves me money*. I absolutely do not miss cable at all.
*Money that funds entities and causes that effectively want me, (a White, Christian, heterosexual male) dead.
Good man and the player you hate unless hes on your team.
I was hoping the Knights would win game 5 just so it would show they still had some fight in them. I feel bad for the team.
Ovechkin, Orlov, and Kuznetsov can visit both Trump and Putin with the Cup. Who will be first?
And Joe Thornton is one of the last to play without a visor.
That’s my Jumbo! (Go Sharks!)
Craig MacTavish in 1997 with St. Louis. Harold Snepsts retired in 1991 with the St. Louis Blues as well, and that was after a 1974 to 1991 career with stops in Vancouver, Minnesota, and Detroit.
Helmets were legally grandfathered in 1979 (those who were under contract prior to June 1 1979 like MacTavish, Langway, and Snepsts and numerous others I grew up with could sign waivers to play bareheaded). They were made optional for a brief period from 1992 to 1994, but that was only taken advantage of for practices and warmups.
Who cares. But i suspect many will keep giving their money to people who hate them in return.

How could u leave out Dale Hunter?
Yes and yes. Agreed.
(let me know if you want on or off the ping list)
The Kansas City Scouts and Washington Capitols were 1975 expansion teams. Scouts eventually became the New Jersey Devils. So with the Scouts gone, my area gets the Saint Louis Blues and has a minor league team the Mavericks. T.J. Oshie was on Blues but left in 2013. Blues were like Vegas and made finals in their three first seasons. But lost all three. Never again made the finals but they have had winning records for a decade but bad luck.
Vegas had three Blacks. I think none were on The Capitols. But there are a few in the league.
Don’t feel bad for the team. Like everyone else in Vegas, they will rally, acknowledge their mistakes, and move on to a more dynamic season in 18-19. Bet on it.
Their fans love them and their parents love them. Not everyone can win all the time. They know it. Fans know it.
(And the merchandizers love them!)

Congratulations to the Washington Capitals on their GREAT play and winning the Stanley Cup Championship. Alex Ovechkin, the team captain, was spectacular - a true Superstar! D.C. is popping, in many ways. What a time!
Idiot liberals conclude that this congratulation of Alex Ovechkin is new evidence of Russian Collusion and demand an all new witch hunt to replace the current FAILED witch hunt.
Congrats to the Washington Capitals and all their fans on winning the Stanley Cup!
I didn't have a strong interest in these finals but it was great to see Ovechkin finally hoist the Cup.
Just look at the defenseman: Murphy, Stevens, Hatcher ... and future Hall of Famer Rod Langway was probably the FOURTH BEST defenseman on that team!
