Just days after the tragic death of fashion icon Kate Spade, new government research sheds light on a disturbing increase in suicides in the United States. The report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that suicide rates have risen dramatically across most of the country in the past three decades.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and is one of just three leading causes that are on the rise.
The rate of suicide in the U.S. rose nearly 30 percent between 1999 and 2016.
In 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide.
While prevention efforts mainly focus on identifying and providing treatment for people with mental illness, experts say suicide is rarely caused by a single factor.
In fact, researchers found that more than half of people who died by suicide during the study period did not have a known diagnosed mental health condition at the time of death.
"Our data suggests that suicide is more than a mental health issue," Schuchat said. "We think that a comprehensive approach to suicide is what's needed. If we only look at this as a mental health issue, we won't make the progress that we need."
The study serves as a reminder, she says, that if someone in your life recently lost a job, ended a relationship, or is having some other life crisis, it's important to reach out.
"Those are the times to really support each other," Schuchat said.
The report found that firearms were the most common method of suicide for both those with and without mental illnesses.

I would not be surprised that is the reason. I have never seen so many people on prescription drugs for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. A friend of mine has always had insomnia and got a prescription sleep drug that said one of the side effects could be wanting to commit suicide. She had to stop taking it because that happened and she had never had any suicidal thoughts before that.
I've known some women who somehow died when their marriage ended. One allegedly went swimming in the swimming pool and then supposedly just died. Her husband was a state legislator so he got off scott free.
The other died the day before the day she was to be the divorced. The husband got her entire estate and custody of her children. (he did NOT attend the funeral or the viewing.)
I think Kate's husband arranged her death. Women do not hang themselves.
Yes, the DC Madam allegedly hanged herself and the secretary of the DC Madam allegedly hanged herself. Then there was the Kennedy wife who supposedly hanged herself. Women don't do that.

Now, shooting themselves seems to be a Male solution when committing Suicide.
Just to be a troublemaker, I’ll say Women usually overdose on Pills. They have the “attempted” Suicide corner wrapped up.
In all seriousness, someone who would do this makes the decision firmly believes that there is no other way.
Depression to the mind is like Cancer to the body. If you don’t have it, you can’t really understand it what it does to a person.
You have broken apart the family, not just the nuclear family but also the extended family.
You discourage people having children so there are no siblings.
You have reduced relationships to sex.
You have actively encouraged people to abandon church.
When people hit a rough patch they have no one to lean on.
Yes, women do commit suicide by hanging but that is not the usual way.
An overdose of drugs is the usual way followed by cutting one’s wrists.
Drowning is next followed by hanging. Both of these means are easily committed by others and made to look like suicide.
