Remember, Disney bought 21st Century Fox entertainment division because Fox thought it was a money loser.
Warners already had a deep dent with “Justice League.”
Although “Black Panther,” “Deadpool 2” (ugh) and “Avengers” all did well, the nature of these FX blockbusters increasingly means that a studio even like Disney is only 2-3 flops away from bankruptcy. “Avengers” was nearly a BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET.
That means Disney has to make $2 billion (!!) at the box office to break even.

Usually these "flops" make up for it in post-theater DVD sales/rentals, pay-for-view, and other distribution methods (i.e. Netflix; Hulu; Amazon Prime, etc.) Many films are even finding it lucrative on YouTube now that they have a advertising model.
Not sure about this Star Wars franchise. I might be the only one on earth who never even saw one Star Wars movie. Back in 1977, when it first came out, I never saw it. I did however like the Christmas song that came out of it.
