Legal bare-knuckle fighting makes bloody debut in Wyoming

The first ever state-sanctioned bare-knuckle boxing match got a bloody ending Saturday night -- and a big response from a raucous crowd.

Arnold Adams, a 32-year-old MMA heavyweight, pounded ex-UFC fighter D.J. Linderman's face into a bloody mess in front of 2,000 rowdy fans at a hockey rink that usually hosts birthday parties and skating lessons in Wyoming's capital. Tens of thousands more tuned in for the pay-per-view event, which featured 10 bouts, including four heavyweight fights in a tournament format.

Did one of the fighters scream “Haduken!” and throw a fireball?

Sorry, but I see no reason to turn humans into cockfighting animals.

Meh.

Humans are sentient beings.

They are aware of what they do and usually, WHY they do it.

Animals are not.

They are forced into the actions we humans desire of them, for our pleasure.

Let the humans knock one another out...save the animals for eating.

(Well...some of them, at least.)

You’re conflating maleness with manhood.

Well put. This is not an antidote to the feminization of society.

"I expect gladiators with edged weapons to show up at some point."

It's just a matter of time--and depth.

We can expect fights to the death, snuff films, and things we cannot even imagine as America, Europe, and the rest of Western Civilization sink further and further into the hellhole of decadence.

The horrors of the present were unimaginable only a few decades ago.

I'm a disgrace because I think it's disgusting to watch two men destroy each other?

Okay, then I'm a disgrace.

Frankly, I think the disgrace is in people satisfying their bloodlust vicariously by proxy violence.

I am aware of the history of pugilism, from the ancient Greeks to the Coliseum to medieval jousts to duels and bare-knuckle "boxing."

I would also like to think that we've risen above the need to watch creatures rip each other apart in a desperate effort to slake some primal urge. And we have, to a large degree; thus the ban on cockfighting, dogfighting, bear-baiting, and bullfights.

But pitting two men against each other not only remains acceptable, it is devolving back into more and more primitive forms.

Would you revert to the days when "gouging" was considered entertainment?

A society that sanctions the very real brutalization/maiming/death of two people for the entertainment of others is in dire trouble and has already seen its best days. There will always be those who will make arguments to justify it (or belittle those who disagree) instead of just admitting that on some very base, very dark level it turns them on to watch it.

I look at the participants in this spectacle and feel about them the same way I do about Bruce Jenner: they have some deep-seated mental, spiritual or emotional problems and are looking to solve it in the worst way possible. What does our society do? Instead of helping them it cheers them on because it does something for them. Yes, it is a disgrace.

Wyoming was also the first territory/state to grant women the right to vote.

Have you heard of the sport of boxing or MMA fighting?

Yeah. Have you heard of the Roman Coliseum?

Why is it so appalling to set two animals at each others' throats, but okay to do the same with human beings?

The words "blood" and "sport" should never be used together.

Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans, traditionally, love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle.

When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball players, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. Now, I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.

I have literally said the same thing about boxing.

As for MMA, it's a recent enough development I figured it might die out. But the same objections hold true there. Especially for the "women's" version. Appalling.

Football? That's hardly a blood sport, although it tends to appeal to the same latent urge for violence, as long as it's vicarious.

None of these should be regulated or outlawed or censored. It's up to the participants and the observers to practice or watch those activities. But it hardly speaks well of our civilization when that is what we consider entertainment.

And I don't understand the compassion some people have for animals while lacking the same concern for people.
