Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) said it would launch the worlds longest commercial flight in October, a near-19 hour non-stop journey from Singapore to the New York area. The 8,277 nautical mile (15,329 kilometer) flight from Singapore to Newark, New Jersey with 161 business class and premium economy seats will eclipse the 7,843 nautical mile Qatar Airways flight from Doha to Auckland as the worlds longest, according to airline data provider OAG.

Great flight - except for the part about ending up in Newark. :)
I just did Singapore to Phoenix through Guangzhou, China and Los Angeles last week. 30 hours door-to-door, including a fair amount of sitting around in airports. Thankfully the CAN-LAX leg was in business class, or I would not be fully conscious yet.

The “Great Circle” routes are the shortest way between any two points on a sphere.
If you pull tight a string between Dallas and Hong Kong on a globe, you’ll see that it passes thru Anchorage

I couldn’t tolerate a 19 hour flight in first class.

I guess I have to study the curvature of the earth better!
Find an Earth globe and a flexible ruler and it will make sense.
(Or assume that all the world's pilots are in on the round earth conspiracy.)

I have plotted many courses on a Lambert Conformal Projection Map. They all appear as straight lines while really describing great circle routes.

I’d rather fly from Singapore to hell than Newark.
Why not JFK?
