A Tesla sedan in Autopilot mode crashed into a parked Laguna Beach Police Department vehicle Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The collision happened at 11:07 a.m. at 20652 Laguna Canyon Road, according to Laguna Police Sgt. Jim Cota. The officer was not in the cruiser at the time of the crash. The Tesla driver suffered minor injuries, but refused transportation to the hospital.
Thankfully there was not an officer at the time in the police car, Cota said. The police car is totaled.

“The markings on the road make a big difference.”
What if they are covered by snow?
What if there is a driving snowstorm too?
And it’s night?
Nope. Every embedded computer does not have an external connection.
It was a white police vehicle driven by a white cop, therefore too privileged to matter?
Here’s the manual:

Got me to thinking...
What happens when an anarchist-type programmer secretly inserts a “Take-Out-The=Pig-Car” subroutine in the Autopilot Program???
Was the cop car legally parked there ??
Sounds like a software glitch .... call the police/crash the police!
I see this tesla got the ramadan software update.
Artificial intelligence is going to get us all killed.
“Did I miss any?”
No. i think you pretty well covered it ... no way could anyone expect the autodriver to correctly function under those bizarre, unusual, and unexpected conditions ...
“Autopilot isnt designed to be used on a road like that.”
but shouldn’t the autopilot know that?
The Autopilot requires human oversight.

What part of Southern California does not have ridiculous traffic?
I read about that in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago. The article said the auto-braking was turned off, while the "safety monitor," a transgender ex-inmate with a history of serious traffic violations, wasn't looking.
If you are not suppose to take your hands off the wheel and stay focused, what is the point? Now instead of just driving, Tesla has you performing another mental task of evaluating the performance of the autopilot system. Seems to me that would be more exhausting than just driving.

I watched the video. Seems to me the autopilot might have put the drivers in bad situations and then saved the day. There really isn’t much video of what was going on before the crash avoidance maneuvers. All the video shows is the system is capable of executing some crash avoidance maneuvers.
I have an idea: Stop calling it autopilot, and start calling it what it is - enhanced cruise control.
That is irrelevant and I’m sure the dead pedestrians family couldn’t care less if one system was turned on or off.
Fact is, this company not only had a high tech automated vehicle but also had human occupant operator and BOTH failed to brake the vehicle prior to impact and prior to brutally killing the female pedestrian.
