I read about that in the Wall Street Journal a few days ago. The article said the auto-braking was turned off, while the "safety monitor," a transgender ex-inmate with a history of serious traffic violations, wasn't looking.
That is irrelevant and I’m sure the dead pedestrians family couldn’t care less if one system was turned on or off.
Fact is, this company not only had a high tech automated vehicle but also had human occupant operator and BOTH failed to brake the vehicle prior to impact and prior to brutally killing the female pedestrian.
