Last month in Philadelphia, a white Starbucks manager summoned police officers to confront a pair of African-American men after one asked to use the restroom before he had purchased a drink. About two weeks later, at Lake Merritt Park in Oakland, Calif., a white woman called police to report a black family that was grilling food for a picnic.
In both instances, the victims were accused of violating laws or rules governing conduct in commercial establishments and public spaces. In the first case, it was for trespassing or loitering. In the second, it was for using a charcoal grill outside of the designated areas.
Quality of life laws serve as a potent instrument of racial segregation. They provide commercial establishments, law enforcement officers and everyday citizens with tools enabling them to police racial boundaries while at the same time claiming to simply be upholding the law.
In contrast to the Jim Crow laws of Americas dark past, these laws supposedly apply to everyone. But in practice, they clearly dont. Like most middle-aged white people, I have spent countless hours in Starbucks without buying anything. Plenty of white people have barbecued, blasted music and drunk alcohol at that same Oakland park, without anyone calling the police.

Just because the author writes it doesn’t make it true.
The writer observes that “most” middle aged white people loaf in Starbucks for hours without buying anything?
No wonder why the country has gone to hell in a hand basket.
Although I’m middle aged, and haven’t done that yet- I have however spent time in bars and cocktail lounges, if you don’t buy anything there they kick you out regardless of your ethnicity.
Why should I have to suffer interacting with riff-raff. THe homeless, drug dealers, and other so-called "youths" who are not adding to the quality of life?
Pure speculation on the authors part.
In addition, he leaves out important parts of the story:
In Starbucks, the two men were asked to leave, but refused. Was the author ever asked to leave, but refused?
In the Oakland scenario, was the barbequeing done before or after the city ordinance was passed?
This is manipulating the story to fit the narrative the author wants us to accept.
I plan to leave a “loaf” at starbucks next time I eat some bad food.
If it were not a convenient place to meet people to transact business I would never darken the door of a Starbucks. I don’t care for their coffee or their political agenda. I do understand that some prefer meeting in a public place and Starbucks stores have become landmarks that are easily found by people not familiar with my area. If I need WiFi I much prefer a public library or even a McDonalds which has better coffee.
Quality of life laws serve as a potent instrument of racial segregation.
These people are dangerously insane. We have to get them out of power. Its a matter of survival at this point.

Just another steaming pile from the New York Slimes.....
He’s right, black people should be allowed to do anything they want, regardless of any laws on the books because of.... because of.... uh, because of..... slavery. That’s it slavery. /s
As per FR tradition, no I did not read the whole article.
The guys had asked about using the bathroom.
This tells you a couple of things:
1) the bathroom was locked.
2) stores that lock bathrooms typically do so because either loitering or the homeless have caused problems in the store.
3) they drew attention to themselves by asking.
Without #2, you don’t have #1, and #3 probably wouldn’t have occurred.
No potty-pun intended, though it would be interesting to see what folks think #3 is.
Dem ebil white peoples.
Jim Crow would be not serving these men. The fact that a place of business limits its restroom facilities to paying customers especially in big cities has been going on for as liong as I can remember for my 69 years. I remember as a young man 50 years ago being told to either buy something or leave.
Bogus race baiting.
Why would you ask to use a bathroom? I recently used the ladies room at the Starbucks in Lambertville, NJ. I just walked in and went inside. No one stopped me.
And just how does he know that no white people in any of Starbucks thousands of stores were ever asked to leave over the years? Or that a white person never had the police called on them because they were barbecuing in that park? Two anecdotes and apparently this is proof that Jim Crow still exists.
OK, I did read the whole article. His last line:
“Limiting the power of white people to use the law to act out their vision of a quality life that excludes black people is a place to start.”
Curious to know his plan for this. Maybe he wants a law that says, it is against the law for a white person to report that a black person is breaking the law.
I remember when one had to have coins for the use of a bathroom stall.
Funny, I live in Oregon and had to purchase something before I was able to use the rest room. Store manager told me, his restrooms were for customers only. I am white.
my white 48 yr old nephew practically lives in SB and never buys a thing. the atmosphere “helps him think” yes, he’s a crazed big lib.
