A viral video shows a young woman getting pummeled by a cop during a wild scuffle on a New Jersey beach at the start of the Memorial Day weekend.
The 54-second clip captures a chaotic scene of two cops struggling to subdue the woman as a child cries and someone repeatedly shouts,

“Freedom of speech does have it’s consequences.”
Freedom of speech should have no consequences from govt. agents.
Shame on you for snarking on the First Amendment.
From what little we do know, it was apparent that we had an underage young woman in possession of alcohol on the beach and the cops were initially willing to let her go after determining she wasn't intoxicated. But instead of counting her blessing and getting on with her weekend, she felt compelled to be disrespectful to the cops. Yes, her free speech rights and all. But it is always unwise to be a smart ass with cops, especially when they just cut you a break.
Ironically, if the young woman went on her way, got drunk, and then had a DUI incident later that day, those same cops that cut her a break could be held legally responsible. We would all be attacking the cops for letting an underage drinker just walk away.
You say two things to a police office, Yes Sir and No Sir. Anything else is asking for a beatdown.
Yes, there were 2 of them and they were bigger. If you watched the video you saw the difficulty she gave them. Its far harder to make someone comply without damaging them. The blows were obviously 1) controlled in force and 2) not effective. It looks bad on video. She played the stupid game of resisting arrest. She won the stupid prize of a couple of whacks upside the head and sand burned cuff marks.
I don’t mean to crap on you Sam, this just seems counter-productive in so many ways.
Three fully-trained cops to arrest one wasted teenager? She was that much of a threat? And isn’t that a gross misuse of resources? It doesn’t do anything to reduce real crime, and does reduce public respect and trust for the police (which they NEED in emergencies).
I’ve seen a lot of this lately, where the cops seem to go for the easy “low-hanging fruit”, busting somebody with no weapon and who won’t fight back, rather than going after hard criminals ... doesn’t look very brave
While I agree the video is not a "good look" for the cops involved, I'd still like to know the whole story before choosing sides. For instance, how did the police originally come in contact with this woman? Was she making trouble earlier to attract their attention? Or were the police, as you speculate, trolling the beach looking for low-hanging fruit to bust.
I've spent a lot of time on beaches over the years. I love the beach. And I've spent a lot of time on some "tough" beaches like Hampton Beach, NH and Revere Beach, MA where you tend to get a seedier crowd and the police presence is high. I have never seen cops out to harass people. Alcohol is prohibited on all these beaches yet many bring alcohol in anyhow. So long as they keep the drinks in their coolers and are discreet, the cops tend to be cool with it. Worst I've seen them do was tell a rowdy bunch of teenagers (who were obviously drinking) to leave the beach, which they promptly did without any drama.
So what happened here is certainly not the norm. I'd like to get the full backstory. That's all.
That is 100% true. But my face would still hurt for a while. Which is why I don't pick on big bruisers. Even though I have the "right" to do so.
‘Has freedom of speech been suspended in New Jersey??’
the Jersey beach has become hostile...I had a run in with a lifeguard and his boss, because I was about twenty yards away from an immense knot of people in the water, and the next thing I know some kid is blowing his whistle at me and motioning me to join the crowd...I’ve been swimming the ocean for sixty-five years, never needed a damned lifeguard; I said I just wanted a little space, he said “I get that sir, but I can’t let you have it...
Not the first and not the last in Wildwood. Chief got his title after beating handcuffed detainees and prosecutor hid the video. WPD had numerous cases a few years ago on its boardwalk. They related to a court decision regarding a person taking a video on Police(phone). WPD tested the decision on several matters. They paid out on many in Civil Court. By the way, nearby Atlantic City had similar incidents many years ago. The entire K9 Unit was trained to say don’t resist. The K9’s were trained to attack on the word resist. Millions of dollars paid out.

Steroids?
Prove it.
FYI - she was given a sobriety test and was determined to not be drunk. However, it WAS determined that she was drinking, and was under-aged. Since she wasn't drunk, the cops were going give her a break and not bust her balls for under-aged drinking. Then the girl mouthed off to the cops. That caused the cops to change their minds, and cite her for under-aged drinking. That's when she resisted arrest and taken down, where she continued to resist arrest.
I live in the West Wildwood, and I go to that exact same beach. Its actually located in North Wildwood, alomg the inlet. A year or so ago, the cops started patrolling the beach specifically looking for alcohol consumption (and no, having your drink in a red solo cup won't get you un-noticed). I have personally seen the patrols approach people. They were respectful, and on occasion have written summons. The adults cited realized they were caught, knew they were breaking the law and gave no guff. The cops laid no hands on them, and the adults stayed on the beach to enjoy the rest of their day. It was no big deal.
Why did they start more purposefully enforcing the existing lays (no alcohol on the beach)? A couple years ago there were alcohol related incidents, people complained, and the town listened.
Are you a BLM supporter?
Good analysis, Lee. I pretty much agree with everything you said on the subject.

"...Steroids? Prove it..."
It clearly didn't prevent her from continuing to resist arrest did it? Apparently they didn't hit her hard enough.........LOL!
There's nothing worse than a drunk broad and that includes rabid coyotes..........At least you can shoot the rabid coyote.......

I saw nothing in the video that would lead me to believe that the cops in the video were on steroids-——and that video was the topic of the thread.
I certainly am not saying that some cops don’t use them,so do some firemen,or lawyers, but whether these cops were———who knows?
.
Good lord, this just popped up——thought I’d share it.:-)
