Updated Privacy Laws

Been getting a lot of emails lately indicating that certain sites are 'updating their privacy laws' in order to be in compliance with new European privacy law. Anyone else been getting a lot of these emails lately? The Websites I'm getting them from I believe mostly are US based sites which makes me curious about why they are updating their policies to comply with the EU privacy laws?

It depends on how this is applied.

It sounds as if the EU could block freerepublic because it posted an article with a picture of someone in it, where they did not have written permission from the person who was in the picture.

The ban seems sweeping. There may be a loophole if it only applies to organizations selling services or items in Europe.

That still covers a lot of territory.

I feel this might be a good thing. I should be able to opt out of organizations selling my online information. I might be willing to pay for that privacy.

Perhaps, this could be a new version of the internet. For $9.99 per month we will insure that every site you visit will be unable to collect information about your online activity.

Websites I frequent are shut down because of it. Specialized DNA websites. It really is disturbing. It reminds me of how California controls things outside its borders.

Wouldn’t that be akin to when a ‘Nigerian Prince’ defrauds one of their monies, another Nigerian group offers to help you retrieve your money, FOR a price-naturally

I've gotten about three. Two were from online stores in Germany that I use frequently. The third was from a spammer who wanted me to "click here to view the new privacy policy." I did not do so.

BTW new scam MEDICARE SURVEY phone call, said they sent you 1, haven’t heard from you, do you want to do it over the phone, answer NO, CLICK! SCAM. Seen a few Email 1’s I’ve sent to Spam.

I don’t even trust Patient Portals, they can be HACKED.

Yeah I’ve got a bad feelign about it- seems draconian- but someone posted a link explaining it- haven’t read it yet- but i hope companies are not giving authority to the EU to regulate content

yeah gotta be careful of those scam calls- they ask you questions that get you to say ‘yes’ then claim you said yes to changing your phone service, or credit card or whatever- thankfully we have caller id- and don’t answer calls from anyone we don’t know- we let the answering machine field the calls- if it’s someone legit we can pick it up- but lately we’ve been getting lots of spam calls- a lot from people claiming to be from irs too

[[ As a courtesy, US sites should stress that their EULAs are US-specific, and acceptance of same consents to US law, not Eurotwit law.]]

I agree- hopefully we’re not giving away our sovereignty by allowing a foreign entity to control things online

[[I would regard this as a test phase where the EU proves that they can force newspapers, social media sites, or whatever....that they have to comply with the EU standards. Once proven successful...you will see yearly attempts to control the brand or message.]]

This is my fear=- test run for big brother-like Internet control

Can I stop the DPS office from selling my personal info?

Your driver’s license info is sold to advertisers the day you go in.

I got junk mail for a few years with a typo that only ever appeared on my temporary ID.
