Subtropical Storm Alberto has formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea, hurricane forecasters said at 9 a.m. Friday.
Alberto is the first named Atlantic storm of 2018, and has formed ahead of the traditional hurricane season which begins June 1.
The storm is expected to bring heavy rain and rip currents to the Gulf Coast through Memorial Day weekend.
Here's the current forecast cone for the storm:
The main difference between a subtropical storm and tropical storm is core temperature, according to Shawn O'Neil, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Slidell. Subtropical storms have slightly lower core temperatures than tropical storms. It's also possible that Alberto will transition to a tropical storm, he said.

The season hasn’t even started yet!
I believe they are becoming so desperate for some weather drama that they are willing to start naming dust devils in Arizona.
LOL naming dust devils. Well, wouldn’t be surprised. They started making snowstorms a few years ago. I bet they did that to create interest and drama about the snow.
I just got over 3 nor’easters!

My boat insurance has a higher deductible for a named storm. In addition, the knuckleheads will name a thunderstorm because the GLOWBULL warming crowd can use the higher number of storms as they prostitute for more funding and higher taxes.
My boat stays in N Fla in the summer/fall hurricane season because the insurance rate is significantly higher in S Fla for me. I would sail down to the Fla Keys at the end of November and come back typically in April when it started to get hot down there.
The insurance notice this month thanked me for not filing any claims for the last two hurricanes (Irma and Mathew) but they still raised the rate 20%. I have no idea how much insurance is for South Fla and I don't care. I have someone who wants to buy it 2 weeks from now and take it to North Carolina. Ten years of boat ownership is about enough for me.
Soon, they will start naming cold fronts. Maybe even individual clouds.

So they’re naming sub-tropical systems. What happens when it becomes a Tropical Storm, they add Sr to the name?
There’s a predicted number of storms this year and one way or the other we’ve got to hit that number or more. They’ll name a cumulus cloud if they have to.
Not a concern until Nautinurse pings out the word!
I’ve already evacuated and I’ll stay evacuated until October.
Let the Weather Channel Orgasmic Circus begin!

Wind, not flooding will be my only concern)
A rain maker for us! Like we need more rain....
YOU sailor have found ‘THE way’ to live... North Carolina in the summer - Florida in Winter? Or further north?
Nice cat.
South Central Alabama here. On east side of Northbound storm. The wet side.
We’ve been naming depressions ever since CAGW became a source of power and money and control for the democrats. And the NHC.
