A Gospel Choir Just Sang "Stand By Me" at the Royal Wedding and It Was Beautiful

In one of the more beautiful moments of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding, guests were treated to a performance of "Stand By Me" by Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir.

The song was performed following Bishop Michael Bruce Curry's address at St. George's Chapel in Windsor. Watch and cry and sing along and watch and cry again:

While everyone has 100% danced to the song at every wedding reception they've ever been to since it was released in 1961, TIME magazine points out that Meghan and Harry's decision for the choir to sing the song at their wedding marks a symbolic turning point for the monarchy.

During the civil rights movement in America, "Stand By Me" rose to popularity during as a "rallying cry for solidarity amongst people of color"

The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, whose mother Doria Ragland is black, is already a significant moment for the monarchy. As British writer Lola Adesioye asks to TIME:

"How did this girl—who is not only of color, but didn’t go to the same schools or universities as the royals, who wasn’t even raised in the U.K., and so has all these points of difference and otherness—get to this place? It says a lot about diversification.”

Yup, the last time the King was an executive was in 17th Century. Those days are long gone.

It begs the question: why have a monarchy?

IIRC, the bridal march was composed as part of an opera, in which it is sung when the bride is being led to consummate the marriage. So in context it is rather inappropriate for a church wedding.

NBC is replaying it. Wonder if the choir will do the theme song from “Ghe Jeffersons” as the bride and groom depart.

“Prince Harry’s got that Jungle Fever.”

Safe to say that Harry’s been to a few rodeos not to mention a memorable visit to Las Vegas.
In her thirty-odd years, Miss Sparkle may never have been blacker. Unfortunately, what may now increasingly emerge is her “professional” blackness. Her situation may have some similarity to the bliss of a young military recruit until discovering; “you joined us, we didn’t join you”.

Stand By Me--Ben E. King (1961)

I saw Ben E. King perform this live in Washington, DC in 1979.

“At least it’s taking the round the clock shooting story off for awhile.”.......

Just wait until David, the Hogg” wakes up, you’ll get your fill of him rather quickly. The corrupt media loves that phony and I’d wager there will be lots of air time for his bull sh%t.

I think the main problem with the American Reverend is that he rambled on way, way too long. It made me squirm in my seat here at home... made you wonder how long he was going to go on and on.

And those strange comments about fire and automobiles, planes, texting, etc. were ridiculous. And of course he had to bring up 'American slavery'.

There are times we should leave politics aside.

Human love is one of them. If they’re happy together, they deserve it.

Its not my business to decide if they make a suitable couple.

Considering the dark pagan theme of ‘Lohengrin’ and its doomed marriage, the ban of ‘Here Comes the Bride’ (’Bridal Chorus) is very appropriate.

It’s gauche to use it at an actual wedding

But in a good production of the opera, the harmonies of the chorus are stunning.

In as much as Harry may be the son of Dianna’s riding instructor

Take a good look at Price Philip at Harry's age. Pretty much dispels that rumor.

‘Mack the Knife’ is an upbeat catchy tune too.

Yeah. I think The Queen just figures that the line of succession goes through Will and his offspring, and lets the rest of it be. The less said the better. I’m sure a royal genealogist was consulted pretty early on.

I haven’t watched one second of this wedding but from what I read it sounds like some wedding planner put together what she thought a black wedding would be like. Interspersed with a royal wedding. I doubt the bride or groom did much planning of it other than a few of their wants.

"Stand By Me" is not exactly a Negro spiritual. It was co-written by Ben E. King, who performed it and turned it into a big hit, along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who were originally from Los Angeles. Leiber and Stoller wrote a number of hits including Hound Dog, Bazoom and Yakety Yak.

Another of their big hits was Saved. Since Leiber and Stoller are Jewish, I assume that this is about a Jew whose faith has been rekindled. They also wrote Smokey Joe's Cafe. When I ate at that cafe, I got better service than Leiber and Stoller did.

Interesting set of photos. Also Diana’s brother - Charles Spencer - used to have flaming red hair... same as Harry’s.

Any Plantagenets or Tudors out there that can replace these German yahoos?

How about some Jacobites?
