It's extremely difficult for me to believe that *any* Hollywood star,of *any* era,was/is a truly respectable person...with the exception of Ronald Reagan and John Wayne.

However,I just did a quick search on Newman and found that he served honorably during WWII,so I just might have to add his name to the other two.

Paul Newman was a great actor. HUD is in my top 5 favorite-movie list. The entire cast was superb.

Have a story about Paul Newman. When we lived in Connecticut, my wife worked for a company that had the top floor in a eight story office building in Westport.

This was back about 1980 and Paul Newman, who was involved in auto racing at the time, had an office devoted to this pursuit on a lower floor. He and his wife Joan & family lived in Westport.

The parking garage for the building was on the bottom level.

My wife was leaving work one day taking the elevator (alone) down to the garage when the elevator stopped on the fourth floor.

Paul Newman steps in to the elevator (unaccompanied). Also going to the parking level.

This was probably the first time my wife, in her life, was rendered speechless. ;)

newman also was heavily involved with the hole in the wall gang camp for sick kids- and worked with hospital tycoons to build cancer wards (or fund them or something like that)

He was a lovely man. Head and shoulders above the average Hollywood sewer rat of today.
