This was back about 1980 and Paul Newman, who was involved in auto racing at the time, had an office devoted to this pursuit on a lower floor. He and his wife Joan & family lived in Westport.
The parking garage for the building was on the bottom level.
My wife was leaving work one day taking the elevator (alone) down to the garage when the elevator stopped on the fourth floor.
Paul Newman steps in to the elevator (unaccompanied). Also going to the parking level.
This was probably the first time my wife, in her life, was rendered speechless. ;)
Heh heh, that would be a shocker and goes to show he was a down to earth person.
Actors that famous now would more than likely have an armed security guy with them, of course times have changed now too.
Along the same line, in 1976 my sister's wedding reception was held in an old Victorian home that also served as a Bed & Breakfast. Paul & his wife were staying there that weekend, and strolled through the lobby while the reception was going on. All of my old aunts were very excited, but they politely declined to join us. ;-)
