Don’t you need a little friction to get some compression?

Are you suggesting that we increase engine friction?

Why post this? This engine will never see the USA.
By accident or by design; the VW diesel scandal has set back diesel engines another 10-15 years here in the US.
To: Red Badger
Sure you do...to get high compression!

Sounds great be must cost a bit.
To: gr8eman
So, we should increase friction in our engines? Dude!

Of all the features they talk about with this engine, the low friction angle seems to be one of the less significant factors.

Re: “Why post this?”
We have a lot of engineers and car buffs on Free Republic.
I was hoping to get some technical observations and feedback.
Based on the Comments so far, I guess all the gear-heads are still at work.

Don't know anything about diesel engines, but it's pretty...lovely shade of blue.

Maybe if they’d used Green it would be better received?
Not very subtle, I know.

Dont you need a little friction to get some compression? No
If it were possible you could get compression with zero friction.
All that is necessary for compression of gases is to reduce the volume of the container.
In an engine this is a mechanical process and so friction is unavoidable.

get a patent for your frictionless piston rings
you’ll make millions!

“Sure you do...to get high compression!”
Compression and friction are two different things. Less friction with the cylinder walls means you can get higher compression if desired.

At some point you need a tight seal to hold the compression in the cylinder. Don’t think you can get that with no metal on metal or some friction. Think if you could engine would last forever! See Porsche!

You want friction? Drain your oil, then go out for a drive.
