“Sure you do...to get high compression!”

Compression and friction are two different things. Less friction with the cylinder walls means you can get higher compression if desired.

At some point you need a tight seal to hold the compression in the cylinder. Don’t think you can get that with no metal on metal or some friction. Think if you could engine would last forever! See Porsche!
