Juncker opens exhibition to Karl Marx

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker has opened a series of exhibitions in Karl Marx’s hometown of Trier.

They include a huge bronze statue of Marx donated by China. It’s to be officially unveiled on Saturday; the 200th anniversary of the birth of the philosopher.

The sculpture of Marx has proved somewhat controversial but Jean-Claude Juncker spoke in positive terms about him.

"Karl Marx was a philosopher, who thought into the future had creative aspirations," he said.

"Today he stands for things, which he is not responsible for and which he didn't cause, because many of the things he wrote down were redrafted into the opposite."

The huge bronze figure is mounted on a pedestal directly in front of the former Marx family home. Chinese President Xi Jinping also praised him.

"Marx is the mentor of the revolution of the proletariat and working people all over the world," he said.

"He is the main founder of Marxism, the founder of Marxist political parties and the creator of international communism, and the greatest thinker of modern times."

Politicians in Trier say they are not glorifying Marx but say he was a significant figure in the town they encourage people to discuss his philosophies.

Marx spent the first 17 years of his live in the town where about 300 events have been organised to mark his bicentenary.

Nothing surprises me. Juncker is a real piece of work.

The ChiComs are ecstatic I'm sure.

How much EU funds were used for this?

"many of the things he wrote down were redrafted into the opposite."

Total lie. Marxists like Lenin, Stalin, and Pol Pot were following Marx's ideals as closely as they could.

Karl Marx was a philosopher???

So he was just a philosophical guy, not one to foment unrest or revolutions,...............

And, they are saying his theories are so wonderful, they have been misinterpreted and misapplied by adherents of Marxism.

This is a pretty big dung heap to get our arms around.........

Trier was the home of the king of the rats in Clemens Brentano's early 19th century Märchen.

Amazing foresight.

Karl Marx had a second-rate mind and his “philosophy” is nothing but worthless pap for people who refuse to take responsibility for their own lives. He contributed nothing to humanity but hatred and diviseness.

Politicians in Trier say they are not glorifying Marx...

Marx would have approved of the lie.

It completely escapes my understanding how ostensibly intelligent people can read Marx and not recognize that he was completely wrong about (1) the nature of the "industrial proletariat", a class that has ceased to exist as he described it; (2) the "progress" of history, which went steadily in a direction opposite from his "inevitable"; i.e. from class solidarity into nationalism before his very eyes; (3) his understanding of the underlying mechanisms of capitalism; (4) his insistence that true class identity was exclusively economic (the Frankfurt School plucked that one away from him and the result is "Cultural Marxism" which is neither cultured nor particularly Marxist); (5) the rise and triumph of Party under socialism and the complete failure of any state that ever tried it to "wither away".

That's just the high points. As a model of government Marxism is a retreat from democracy and a return to oligarchy, consistently and across every system that has ever adopted it. It glorifies the working man while it reduces him to penury. It promises plenty and delivers squalor. It deifies the will of the people while it is building walls and barbed wire fences to keep them prisoner. It is the worship of naked force, not justice.

And now the Euros have a nice giant statue to kowtow to. It serves them right, but their grandchildren will curse them.

By whom? Yes, the very socialist/communists Marx inspired!!!

You notice how it's never their fault?

Very well said.

But I believe that Marx's Hegellian view of historic "progression" is essentially correct. The problem is, the Left creates an artifical dialectic to advance the "evolution" into the socialist -- and ultimately, communist -- state.

There IS no true antithesis arising against capitalism. There is no true dialectic emerging to offset the status quo. There's only this faked-up, ginned-up, Soros-inspired, Alinskyite charade masquerading as a historical force.

Marx was the guy Fredrick the Great referenced with his quote “The best way I know how to punish a province is to allow it be ruled by a philosopher”

Was this a Google translate story or something? This sentence especially is missing commas, periods, words...

China gave a statue to be displayed in Trier.

It’s like the Anti-Statue of Liberty.

Farking disgusting. EU? More like PU. You’d think after Brexit they would want to cut down on crazy BS that encourages Euroscepticism, but no.
