Hmmm...That could lead to a new FR record for responses...Even Johnny Carson may have to be exhumed to join in...{:-)
The tavern I remember was across PCH.
Across Seventh St? Not sure I went there much if at all. I just remember the one by the bookstore.
“I have a great story about the 49ers Tavern”
Hahaha, I’m sure my buddy has some too. He couldn’t stay out of the 49er Tavern, he never did finish that Zoology degree. Fortunately computers came along and he did real well with IT.
Lakewood here. Still go to Joe Josts every chance I get for a Special an egg and a schooner!
Ahh, yes, Coach Allen, great guy. I had the pleasure of driving him to an event ( my company hired him as a guest speaker ) after the event he and I went to his office, which was at the corner of Clark and Anaheim (near little Rec). He and I spoke for about a half hour. Too bad that he was not able to save 49er football.
The Nugget! Spent too much time there! Once saw Big Joe Turner play there one night.
You are both right. The 49er was on PCH. At Bellflower just south of 7th. Recall those three all cross each other at about the same spot.
The event was an amateur contest in the morning/afternoon and professional acts in the evening. I attended twice and worked on the committee twice. The shows were renowned for having still little known people who soon became major stars. As I recall:
1981: Bonnie Raite and John Stewart with Norton Buffalo, Joe Ely and Guy Clark
1980: Doc Watson and Jerry Jeff Walker with Robert Earl Keene, Steve Earle, Jimmy Dale Gilmore
1979: Kenny Rogers and Linda Ronstadt with John Prine and Delbert McClinton
1978: Jimmy Buffett and ???
There were others and likely I have the lineups mixed up (the memory is the second thing to go, and I forget the first).
Can anyone shed some light: Other acts or the line ups?
wow Michael...your bringing back the memories...we retired to southern Missouri 15 years ago have not been back
Joe Josts egg and schooner special
what a great story about George Allen...how many times I drove down Anaheim street from working down in the Harbor...35 years worth off and on.
Does that freaky cult ( people with white robes walking out front ) still have a street front on Anaheim St. ( down by Wilson HS ) wife an I were talking about them the other night. To weird... I know your in Lakewood you may not even know about them folks
Coach Allen had long been a man I admired, since I was a kid and he coached the LA Rams. It was a great afternoon, for sure.
I don't know about the place on Anaheim that you refer to. I lived in Lakewood and Long Beach from birth until 1992 and still go there 2-3 times a year and Joe Jost is a must stop!
