Over the past decade, more than 3.5 million Americans have left high-tax blue states like California, New York, and many others in the Northeast, for low-tax red states like Arizona, Florida, and Texas.
While the migration has been happening for years, conservative economists Arthur Laffer and Stephen Moore are forecasting the next significant movement out of blue states could be right around the corner.
Earlier this week, in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “So Long, California. Sayonara, New York,” Laffer and Moore spoke about a provision within the brand-new tax bill that could create a mass migration of roughly 800,000 people – fleeing their estates in California and New York for better days in low-tax states over the next three or so years.
Both authors said capping the deduction for state and local taxes (SALT) to $10,000 will accelerate the velocity of the migration of high-income earners from the Northeast and California to regions like “Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah.”
“High earners in places with hefty income taxes – not just California and New York, but also Minnesota and New Jersey – will bear more of the true cost of their state government.
Also in big trouble are Connecticut and Illinois, where the overall state and local tax burden (especially property taxes) is so onerous that high-income residents will feel the burn now that they can’t deduct these costs on their federal returns. On the other side are nine states – including Florida, Nevada, Texas and Washington—that impose no tax at all on earned income.”

A few years back, this native of the once-golden state moved to a solidly GOP (I hate the term "red") state, and some of my motivating factors were:
1. Politics. I hated the growing influence of the Harvy Weinstein progressives. It's to the point where the system is so gamed that GOP candidates for US Senate don't even need to appear on the ballot.
2. Second Amendment. The Cali legislature makes it increasingly difficult for responsible citizens to own and use firearms.
3. Crime. I witnessed dramatic crime rate increases; and I suspect that many Cali cities and counties are experts at under-reporting crimes.
4. Illegal alien invasion. Drug gangs, diseases (such as hep a and TB)
5. Taxes. This was fifth on my list. Money is important, but so is cultural preservation and personal safety.
So, I wonder what might be the proportion of those fleeing Cali (and NY) that are conservative political refugees? I suspect that the ratio of GOPers/Dems is quite high.

If you’re trying to do it on salary, you won’t. But housing costs are less than 1/3 of CA or NY, and if you are a self employed professional, you can do it anywhere.

When will liberals figure out the Democrat policies are what they are fleeing from?

NYC is surprisingly friendly to retirees. All SS, and the first $20K of pensions, is exempt from state and city income tax. They are definitely trying to keep retirees from leaving.
The migration is like Muslims migrating to countries to establish a caliphate.
Florida has been destroyed by demographics and being a low personal income tax state. Texas will fall as well. Other Southern states that are cheaper to live will be taken over in time.
Hopefully the recent mass shootings in Florida will deter them from coming here.
I am East of Boise and agree on the invasion. My wife and I can’t stand going into Boise due to the California and Pudget Sound virus. We were stationed in Colorado Springs when it was invaded with over 600,000 homes built by Californians. We were lucky enough to relocate to middle of nowhere Idaho in 2001 after 25 years in the Air Force. Having seen what they have done to Colorado I fear for once solid conservative Idaho.
Except it was the conservative Californians that are leaving the state, not the liberals. In my area of AZ half of the residents come from CA and Trump carried the area by 30%. Would have been 35% but some long time residents voted for Johnson.
Look at the voting patterns over the past twenty-five years. The Republicans went from 39% to 26% of registered voters, lost a dozen House seats, no longer competitive in the Senate races, don’t hold any state executive offices (and no chance of getting any soon), and Dems have a super majority in the legislature (in 1994 it was even).
Doesn’t happen if liberals leave the state. It does happen when conservative voters die or leave the state and are replaced with liberal voters.
Enlightenment is such a great thing to watch. I hope they leave all of their stupid politics behind, and the new destinations intact.
Wish people would stay and fight.

I agree with your list. If so many have already fled these areas what has the impact been on representation in Congress. I’d like to see those results.

Short of personal interviews, the demographics would be a guess. Your motivating factors were spot on but I fear one can no longer trust a relocation choice to continue to hit all of your list boxes as time passes. The fabric of American society changed dramatically to favor minorities under Obama and I see no no way that genie will be put back in the bottle given our federal courts.
