That’s a good description of the actions of a “cut worm”.
Too early in central TX for cut worms, and I have planted my tomatoes for this year. We are really dry and need rain. Just waiting for the chiggers to hatch and make outside chores miserable.
Oh spring!! Where is your annoying bite?
My lettuce is thriving in this up and down weather. The rain helped it grow as well. Pansies doing very well also. Hoping the lilies will soon poke their shoots above ground soon.
Well, at least you’ll have some good salad. Romaine was recalled recently, so there was none in our stores.
Dogwoods and redbuds are blooming here in the Missouri Ozarks. We’ve finally turned the corner on old man winter.
Tomatoes, peppers, lettuce and cukes are all doing well.
Home Depot store in Osage Beach has tomatoes about the same size as we started. They want $15.95 each !
Local veggie and fruit market Farris Fruit has really big tomatoes in pots for $30 each !
We never knew how well off we were...
I know. That is a real bummer as romaine is much better than any head lettuce.
I bought some asparagus crowns last year from a big box store and never planted them, bought some new ones a couple weeks ago and will plant them today.
None of the packages from either year have any packing dates or expiration dates, etc. I’ve decided I’m going to plant the older ones since I already paid for them and why not experiment. Would you?
What was your biggest surprise, success gardening that you thought might be a failure going in?

It’s finally springtime in new England! :-)
The weather is gorgeous this morning so I plan on raking up the leaf litter deposited by the last rain storm and plant caladium bulbs and coleous plants. Perfect day for it. Wish I could share the lettuce. There is so much and it is so good!
I got them at Runnings. They also had 5 pound bags that were close to $5 each, but all their 50 pound sacks were $16.
My fruit trees are beginning to bloom, nice day South of Boston!

My problem, too! Now that I have the TIME to enjoy the Spring, versus running around like a Madwoman from March - June at the Garden Center, I have to really make myself s-l-o-w down and handle ONE thing at a time, versus juggling 15 things at once - that are all on fire, LOL!
These past two Spring seasons, NOT WORKING during Crazy Time and getting to work in my own garden, have been HEAVEN! :)

Two of my favorites! We can grow the Redbuds (Northern strain of the Eastern), but not the same ‘type’ of Dogwood trees you can have in your zone. We can grow the ‘Pagoda’ type, which are also pretty, but don’t have the fantastic blooms. They bloom, but the flowers are much smaller.
Man, those prices for tomatoes are INSANE! As they say, growing your own food is like printing your own money! ;)
Plus, it tastes so good! :)
If anyone cares, the Greenhouse project only went $62 over budget because we ruined two panels being dum@sses, LOL! And, as an added bonus, neither of us got hurt requiring a trip to the ER! :)
So, all in all, an 8’x12’ Greenhouse, that wasn’t too hard to build if you have basic building skills and can interpret pictures for instructions, cost us $1,982.09.
The gravel for the pad ran us $200, but we also used some of it to improve the road that goes back to our rental corn/hay/soybean field to the west.
That’s astonishing - you could make a fortune just selling starts at just a little under those prices. LOL
I like a mixture of iceburg and romaine-it’s all about the crispness to me.
I’m always up for an experiment. My biggest surprise was that I grew anything at all that first year. I had a small 3 x 4 ft. bed and a 2x4 ft. bed. Everything grew well.
Hubby had made fun of the sq.ft. gardening concept and disparaged what I had planned to plant. In addition, I’d killed every house plant that I had tried to grow.
Mel’s mix saved me-impossible to overwater. LOL
YIPEE doodle dandy! Spring time and gardens begin.
Looks fantastic. Frugal is always good. Love the beds too.
