The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be gardening.

Greetings from Missouri. Nice day today with sunshine. Rained all night last night. Drying out so should be ok for planting tomorrow.

We have lots of pots of starts in green house waiting for warmer weather to transplant. Shipment of herb plants came in. Tarragon, Rosemary, Thyme, Stevia.

Fruit trees seem to have survived the last frost, still have blooms and bees are investigating. Hoping to get some fruit this year.

Hubby is trying out some yakon this year. Anybody else grow it? Any tips for eating?

Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

I have to tell you ..the weather here in Louisiana has been absolutely perfect...50’s at night 70’s during the day....after residing in Maine for about 10 years I have to say I am entirely unaccustomed to this for spring . Shouldn’t it be MUD season right now?

I use tweezers for small seeds - just put some in palm of left hand, and use tweezers to pick on up and plant. Generally, I don’t plant that much at once.

If I’m lazy and in a hurry I just sprinkle the palm full over an area and then sprinkle some dirt on top.

LOL. Count your many blessings. Count them one by one. Don’t sweat the mud or lack thereof.

Soaking my Revelation corn seed to pre-sprout it before I start it in the greenhouse to get a head start on the season. It will go in the garden around the end of May…

Bought a 50 pound sack of Yukon Gold seed potatoes for $16 this week. I’ve cut 50 seed pieces, and than took the eyeless portions to the kitchen. Locally, YG’s go for over $1/pound, so it’s a bargain: use 1/3 in the kitchen, and the seed & any more for the house are ‘free’. LOL

One day after work, I fueled the tiller & chipper-shredder, and both started right up, after sitting idle all winter. I used the tiller to prep a bed, and planted about 75 each yellow onion & garlic sets. That’s in addition to the the fall planted garlic that came up, as well as some volunteers that got missed at harvest last year.

This weekend will see peas, carrots, and potatoes planted, despite a full moon. MAYBE some spinach, too; we’ll see.
Can’t get too ambitious, as we always get hard frosts in May.

That’s a pretty short DTM for corn. Might have to try it next year. We tried Evergreen this year.

Hubby has dozens of tomatoes that he started for seeds. We haven’t planted the lettuce yet here. Most likely will do it next week.

Where did you get the Yukon Gold? That is really cheap compared to most I’ve seen.

I haven’t even done any starts yet because it’s been too cold.

I threw a couple san marzano tomato plants and some squash and cucumber plants in last month. I planted bush peas
and green beans.

Something ate the cucumbers.

Peas sprouted almost overnight but still too cold for green beans or have seeds that are too old.

Trying to keep things alive with sevin dust and slug food.

It’s alive but not thriving due to the cold.

I hope the prolonged cold isn’t going to cause any food shortages.

SF Bay Area here too. Ordered cucumber, melon, tomato seeds. Have NOT started tomatoes yet but will do so soon.

In my neighborhood there’s a nasty blight that kills a healthy potted tomato plant, just as if you’d cut the stem open with a scissors. Don’t know if what varieties I have are disease resistant. Last plant to so succumb was a Picardy. Taking my chances and will try to let hope triumph over experience.

A plant with a healthy root system (volunteer potted or transplanted in-ground) has a better chance of survival. Potted transplants don’t do as well, I think.
