How Nick Saban Keeps Alabama Football Rolling
Yahoo News ^ | 4-24-2018 | Brian O'keefe

Nick Saban knows what he’s doing isn’t normal. The University of Alabama football coach is well aware that it’s anything but typical for one school to thoroughly dominate a major sport the way his Crimson Tide has ruled college football over the past decade. More to the point, he knows that it’s well outside the bounds of ordinary to expect 18- to 22-year-olds to win national championships—and then work even harder to get better. “To me it takes a completely different mindset to stay successful as opposed to what you have to do to build something to be successful,” says Saban. “All of us are sort of geared toward, if we have success, we’re supposed to be rewarded for it, not necessarily that we have to continue to do things even better than we did before.”

It’s the Friday before his team’s first scrimmage of spring practice, and Saban, 66, is sitting, legs crossed, in a plush chair in his wood-paneled office in Tuscaloosa, Ala., a collection of championship rings spread out on the coffee table in front of him. Clad in a black pullover sweater, gray slacks, and black loafers, the coach is in a reflective mood. But his trademark intensity begins to show as he warms to the subject: Being a champion means, well, being different.

Nick Saban is featured on our World’s Greatest Leaders list. See the full list here.

“I mean, it’s like you make an A on a test and you say, ‘I can take it easy for two weeks and make a C on the next test and have a B average.’

- Roll Tide -

Coach 'Bear' Bryant's great grandson, (Paul Tyson) has signed a letter of intent to join the Tide in December when he graduates from HS. He's a 6'2", 215 pound quarterback, a pretty good one they say (4 star).

Saban & Tyson

I agree, and I'm an Auburn fan. I'm not one of the "mutual hate" crowd. I assure you, around this state there is plenty of mutual respect, too. In its proper place and perspective, a great rivalry is both fun and satisfying. Football season is usually interesting in Alabama.

As a Gator, I have the highest admiration for Saban.

If I had a kid who played football, I’d want him to play for Saban.

Lightening might strike me down for criticizing Nick Saban, but one aspect of the program that bugs me is how they stack up highly rated QBs. Not only have they received commitments from Bear Bryant's grandson, but also from former Bama QB Jay Barker's son and the younger brother of Tua Tagovailoa. And I think all those commitments are for next year's recruitment class.

There is a long list of highly regarded QBs who came to Bama during the past decade and never got enough playing time to learn whether they could be a major college QB,or not. A good number eventually transfered and tried it elsewhere, but most never established themselves elsewhere after spending two to four years in Tuscaloosa.

Having said that, Roll Tide and make it six of the last ten next year.

Coach Saban has won 5 NCAA championships over 9 years for Alabama football. Coach Wooden won 10 in 12 years with 7 straight for UCLA basketball. Coach Gable won 9 straight (’78-86) for Iowa Wrestling, 15 in 24 years for his career there. The 9 straight NCAA championships was also done by Yale in Golf (1915-13) and USC in Track (1935-43). Women also can have dynasties. UNC Women’s soccer won 9 straight NCAA championships. UConn Women’s basketball won 4 straight. Unless one makes the quantitative argument that, next to football, there are no other ‘major’ sports, Coach Saban’s achievements, although certainly laudable, are neither unique nor the most dominating in sports history. More credit will be due to Saban and the Tide for however long they can maintain at least this much domination with a clean (and I’ve heard nothing to suggest otherwise) program.

That being said, Go Cocks!
