It’s Raining Parking Tickets in New York’s Midtown as Police Enforce New Traffic Rules

Parking in Manhattan is difficult enough for limousine, truck and delivery drivers. But they faced an additional challenge this week when New York City rolled out new regulations in the heart of Midtown.

Parking and loading is now prohibited on both sides of most blocks between Sixth Avenue and Madison Avenue from 45th Street to 50th Street during morning and evening rush hours, according to a new regulation, which began April 16.

The six-month pilot program, called Clear Curbs, is one of several programs launched by the city to combat congestion.

In the first three days of the program, officers issued 3,000 tickets and towed 36 vehicles in the area, according to the New York Police Department.

Among the biggest casualties of the blitz were companies whose drivers had to leave their vehicle to make deliveries. Parcel carriers reported calling in extra staff to stay with trucks or having to park outside the enforcement zone and haul packages for several blocks along crowded sidewalks.

It’s out of control. We just had our car towed. We parked on Bleecker below a sign saying free parking after 6pm. What we didn’t notice was a smaller sign above it saying that it was illegal to park there! Cost us $300 to recover it.

Good.

The pickups can walk a few blocks to get out of the crush.

There is nothing more arrogant than drivers stopping traffic for their customer’s convenience — the rest of the drivers be damned.

It should be a hanging offense but tickets is a good start.

Well...lessee...the city is going even more bankrupt so the “solution” is to dissuade deliveries and commerce! brilliant!

How does NYC think foods and goods are delivered? What about the restaurants and delis that depend on fresh meats and such?

So glad I live out in the country.

I've only driven in Manhattan a couple of times and each time,to quote Roseann Rosanadana,"I thought I was gonna die!"

Even walking in Manhattan raises my blood pressure 50 points.

They obviously need more loading zones...dumb idea to start this type of enforcement without giving delivery drivers some other options.

No one drives in Manhattan. They crawl slower than walking speed.

Well, the good news is that you could fight it in court and probably win, since there are conflicting signs.

There used to be a show called National Geographic Explorer. It aired on Saturday morning and was geared toward young people. There was a segment on the brownies, I think they called them; the people who issue parking tickets in NYC. They were vicious issuing tickets and towing vehicles. they were even towing UPS trucks.

At one point the brownie walks past a construction site were there are numerous vehicles illegally parked. A director asks why she doesn’t site any of them. She looks up the high rise at the iron workers erecting steel and says, “That’s a good way to get hit with a wrench from 40 floors up.”

Cost us $300 to recover it.

No doubt from a thuggish organization with deep Dem connections.

Yeah, a few years back they started towing police department and FBI cars. The enforcers are mostly women from the Caribbean (Jamaica, I think?). Not diverse at all. Anyway, they do not mess around.

My favorite Bloomie-era NYC money-grubbing, um, “Revenue Enhancement” story is the poor guy, on a smoke break outside, sitting on an overturned milk crate, got ticketed for “illegal use of a milk crate”.
