FAIRBANKSA Fairbanks man critically shot a pit bull in Aurora Subdivision on Wednesday evening after it attacked another dog being walked by two girls.
The pit bull was shot twice in the head and later euthanized by a veterinarian, according to Fairbanks police officer Doug Welborn.
The 12- and 16-year-old girls were walking their rat terrier on the 2000 block of Bridgewater Drive when the attack happened. The girls were not injured, but the pit bull's owner was bitten while trying to stop the attack, according to Welborn.
Vern Woods, 80, told the Daily News-Miner he was home watching TV when he saw the two girls come out of their house with their dog on a leash. They crossed to Woods' side of the street and were taking pictures when the pit bull "came out of nowhere at a dead run." . . .

Yes. They have large, thick skulls. It’s a desirable trait of the dogfighting breeds. They are bred to be difficult to kill. The longer they live in the pits, and the more times they can fight, the more money they make and are worth.
Ping
Theres another species I feel that way about
You cant reason with lap dog folk
Freepers get real statist about pits
Some dont like any dog that wouldnt fit in a Summers Eve ad
I like Chihuahuas and Jacks too btw
Because pit bulls should be outlawed. Period.
Please do not defend them or attack me. You know I am right.
Helmets for dwarf bowling.
I think all dogs doing what the pit bulls do should be killed.
A Fairbanks man “critically shot” ...
If he was a “critic”, why did he shoot the dog instead of chastising it?
PISS POOR WRITING again.
It should have read “ A Fairbanks man shot and critically wounded a ...”
I guess the Un. of Alaska journalism school isn’t high on the list of the top 10 schools in the nation.
I am of the opinion that most news outlets will accept almost anyone, and that spellcheck is optional, and very few are able to diagram a sentence.
There is a WaPo article out in the last couple of days online, a large one with a lot of pics, that details the animal rescue organizations’ bidding against dog breeders for “rescue dogs” at breeder auctions. Apparently, they are paying thousands for one dog, in some cases, and it’s having the unintended effect of raising the price of papered dogs. This is being done with donation money.
Im pretty sure pit bulls are the most common breed in America besides mongrel adoptus ..the favorite of childless hipsters....
Ive owned them and their cousin the standard American bulldog not to be confused with the Johnson Bulldog which has an English face and slobbermouth.....one of each are on my homepage
My daughter has a pit also on my homepage....the great not to be underestimated ever Axel....white dogo looking fellow....completely non human aggressive but can in no way be around other dominant uncut male dogs....
But thats not a quality simply of Pitbulls ...I had a large Rottweiler that was a very game fellow too
Ive also seen a Catahoula too that didnt suffer fools gladly
And my Doberman was very wary of men....and would bite
Ive only had one of about 15 dogs that was a real mauler....that black boy in my pics ...on the stairs with wifey and I gave him up though I now own his last spawn...a brindle puppy
And that female brindle and white bully on my homepage was a gorgeous girl but would kill any non stud animal she could....foxes cat possum and other female dogs...even a deer...she locked onto a stallion of mine by the lip once when he was dragging me around the corral like a dishrag....she locked on he froze in place...her instinct
My first Rott saved my girlfriend in Gainesville from rape and murder in her shower from a black serial intruder in 1987
My point is any sizable dog is a potential problem and I dont leave mine unattended or off lead but I live rural so thats not an issue
Coyotes dont invade my little horse farm anymore than if I had Kangols or Pyrenees
Pits are ubiquitous and often have crap owners
They are for sure good dog fighters but Ive seen Rotts and oddly enough a Kangol kill them
Its a hard call but in my opinion their popularity is the main but not only reason they figure in most dog attacks
Im a big man and can handle dogs...they just submit...Im a giant with a deep voice..
Im ambivalent I guess.....Ive owned several pits and know what they are capable of yes
But I think this sorta boils down to many here think its not appropriate to own potentially dangerous animals period
I dont guess there is anyway to ascertain proportionately on the subject of attacks
I like sporting dogs too.....which oddly enough pits once were
And I dont think Pits make great guard dogs like Malnois or Rotts or Dobes
Pits have strong livestock instincts and hound hunting.....
They simply are not all crazy killers....but some are no doubt
My co grandfather....dad of my son in law ...is a good southern man like me although from East Tennessee unlike Mississippi me ....he raises and trains Malnois and Beauceron and Alsatians and Dobermans and Rotts for worldwide applications from special forces to Saudis to Brits to Israelis etc
25,000 a dog....its serious business ....and hes been at it 35 years
He claims most dangerous dog to humans is a big 90 pound plus Doberman...they are smart and strike high and simply dont quit and if the right dna are fearless
He and I had one from the same breeder in east TN
He was correction collar training his and being a Dobie and not a dumb bulldog it knew right away who was hurting it and attacked him
97 stitches all over his upper bicep and shoulder
He luckily had a English choke collar on the dog and choked the dog out
He stumbled away bleeding profusely the dog came to and went after him again ...fortunately he had a door to get closed behind him in time
And this is a man who knows dogs......
I tend to agree but there are not that many big Dobes anymore.....mostly puny femme looking things now
Anyhow thats my two cents....
I also take care of my oldest daughters chihuahua Ruby and love Jacks too and Frenchies
But they cant save ya
Lol ok mother.
“I dont guess there is anyway to ascertain proportionately on the subject of attacks”
If I understand you right, you are stating that there is no way to accurately record the number of attacks by pit bull type dogs vs. other breeds. Is that correct?
I think any dog that bites seriously or kills is already euthanized..regardless the breed ....I guess we could torture them too....like punishment....aggravated crime
Funny though isnt it
A grizzly kills some townspeople or park hikers and folks plead not to euthanize the killer bear
We live in an inconsistent world
I do agree irresponsible owners are liable criminally and civil
Pitbulls are like white southerners or South African or Wehrmacht vets of the doggie kingdom
Proportionate to their respective numbers of the dog population
Like for example Dogos and Isla Canaria dogs are in my opinion far more dangerous and larger but few of them
Did writers in the 18th and 19th century lament pit bull attacks
Pits and other bulldog strains were very common and utilized then
The old Southern White comes from that era....a progenitor of todays American bulldog
Btw
SHIBUMI REST IN PEACE BIG GUY...
YOU ARE MISSED
“Pitbulls are like white southerners or South African or Wehrmacht vets of the doggie kingdom”
No. Pitbulls and other such dogs are dogs. And a created breed of dog, bred by men, for men’s purposes. They are not human beings.
What you have just said equates a human being to a dog.
I would be happy to discuss this with you further, maybe tomorrow (as it is late) but I really hope that you would rethink what you have said here. Thank you.
I'm not part of the fetish, but I do know the answer.
Pit bulls kill 12-15 human beings per year in the USA. Most of the dead are very young or very old.
Since 1982, pit bulls have killed more than 500 human beings.
Since 1982, mass shooters with semi-automatic rifles have killed 300 humans, and that includes the 58 people murdered by the Las Vegas shooter about six months ago.
Interesting that someone would call these postings a “fetish”.
I believe that your numbers are a bit out of date, on the low side. I thought that the number of deaths in the US was 29 last year.
Update: I was wrong. I was low, too. The information is below.
Pit bulls killed 40 people in 2017, 39 in the U.S. and one in Canada, a total of 12 more people than were killed by pit bulls in 2016 and five more than the previous record of 34 killed in 2015.
