Some students at Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in Kansas say a school-sponsored operetta production is not only racist, but also rife with cultural appropriation.
FHSU Music and Theatre describes its production of The Mikado as a fun burlesque romp about the whimsy of love on its Facebook page. According to the operettas description, the play takes place in a mythical Japan, where the main character has been appointed Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute before the arrival of the ruling Mikado.

Here’s a piece of trivia: The Mikado was a favorite of the serial killer known as “the Zodiac”. He alluded to or quoted it several times in his letters.
What about ageism - Is it wrong for a young person to portray a senior citizen in a movie or a play?
What about specieism - In the Disney play LION KING humans play the animals - isn’t that wrong?
What about liveism - in the play OUR TOWN live people play dead people - isn’t that wrong?
I am sure I can come up with more examples of people playing people or things they are not - it is called ACTING - it is called ENTERTAINMENT. Please when will all this be over
Just guessing that the complainers aren't Asian.
The ironic part is those who are against “cultural appropriation” are also against wall and borders.....
If they wanted to stop “cultural appropriation” shouldn’t they be all for borders and walls to keep them cultures all separate and stuff???
Maybe they want mandatory DNA testing for what you are allowed to wear/eat.......
And if we allow these little idiots to get away with this behavior, we deserve what we get.
More candidates for the cheap and chippy chopper on a big, black block when the revolution comes.
Everyone who is not European and is benefiting from Western Civilization, which was created by Europeans, is engaged in cultural appropriation.
Its probably a good thing it wasn’t Mandingo
Then take down every Hollywood production that isn’t in the present day. No Westerns and no futuristic movies. No superheroes. No comics or anomie. No black directors if the protagonist is white or Asian. No white producers, aka Uncle Money Pockets, for Hispanic movies. No actors playing homo roles who aren’t gay and vice versus. No lifts in male actor’s shoes and no boob enhancements in female actresses.
Wait. Oops. This sounds like segregation and racism...
I listened to mountain blues awhile back and enjoyed it- was i being culturally insensitive? Racist for not liking, and espousing rap or something?
What’s the point of going to school if you’re not going to learn anything useful? I’m so tired of leftists and their fake outrage over everything while using the same stupid talking points.
To appropriate means to take (something) for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission.
A culture is not a thing that can be taken only imitated and it has no owners only current followers.
Besides if you want to go down that road... The Japanese appropriated it from China first so it is only social justice that it be taken from them. :)
“All theatre is cultural appropriation from the Greeks. :/”
You do realize, of course, that pointing that out to the snowflake brigade on parade here would either be so foreign to them that their head would explode or they would simply go into a total meltdown.
Also, being from KS originally, I can’t believe the collection of sh*tkickers that usually attend FHSU can even form the concept of “cultural appropriation” in their little pin heads.
Cultural appropriation has got to be the stupidest of Leftist tropes. Damn near everything is cultural appropriation. People influence one another and share ideas. They always have.
Italian food? They got pasta from China and tomatoes from the Americas and coffee from the Turks who got it in turn from the Ethiopian highlands.
Go to China today and just look at all the Western brands and technology everywhere. And on and on.
All theatre is cultural appropriation from the Greeks. :/
Kids these days must take advanced classes in Stupid.
