A challenge of this populist age is separating authentic outsiders with usefully unorthodox political perspectives from rank kooks looking to exploit a moment of open-mindedness.
Roseanne Barr provides a good study.
The popular reboot of her blue-collar sitcom after a two-decade slumber has been widely heralded as a populist victory by much of the pro-Trump Right, given the decision to cast Roseanne

This just proves that National Review isn’t even competent to comment on things they know best: nuts.
They loved her until she started supporting Trump.
RE: I should listen to some Nut at National Review?
Nope, you should READ the reasons why the writer used the word “nut” to describe her. I believe they are legitimate reasons.
Bingo.
RE: National Review is staffed with open borders neocons.
National Review is staffed with VARIOUS writers with DIFFERENT OPINIONS on the border. And not all of them are neocons or NeverTrumpers wither.
The author of this piece has not made known his views on the borders.
We should take the articles on a case by case basis, not tar and feather every single writer who contributes his opinion.
RE: You want her to reap less praise then more people have to support Trump
You want to praise her where praise is due, while at the same time be cautious in NOT overdoing it since her own political opinions leave much to be desired.
RE: The National Review, full of Commie NeverTrumper nuts, is one to judge anyone
That is an OVER-GENERALIZATION. Read the article and tell me which part you disagree with.
She’s a great comedian...AND she makes everyone else good, too.
RE: NR said that about Trump too.
Show me the article that used the word “nut” for Trump.
Never watched her before...not about to do so now. She travels too far into disgusting field.
Remember when you used to post anti-Trump articles endlessly.
Roseann Barr, that lovely gifted-voice actor, who in years passed sang her, ahem, rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”, with an accompanying motion that was quite indicative of her true self.
I have not forgotten that “act”.
But, there are many who have, and just as many that did not see that, ahem, ‘rendition’.
So, Roseann, you are on TV again! (click!)
GOP-e is all in favor of a big tent as long is it’s only extended to urban liberal bourgeoisie who are open to voting for Republicans as long as they embrace the entire Democrat platform in somewhat less strident tone than Fauxahontas.
RE: Remember when you used to post anti-Trump articles endlessly.
And do you similarly remember when I used to and still post PRO-TRUMP articles as well? Or do you only focus on what you want to see?
And oh yeah, why is this considered an anti-Trump article? It is about Roseanne Barr.
The Domestic Goddess is a survivor!
She might be (just might be)liberal but I still love her spirit.
“I’m voting for Pedro!”
national review or not she’s certifiable!!! She stated that the maximum amount any one could have is $100,000,000 and any one cauhgt with more shoud be beheaded!!!! And she was serious!!!
I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone when I see a bunch of conservatives tout Roseanne as a "conservative" TV series.
What's next, will we start claiming Married With Children promotes traditional family values and that Al Bundy is a Jesse Helms type?
Ahhh, give the girl a break... https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2015/07/23/roseanne-on-the-day-she-shrieked-the-star-spangled-banner-grabbed-her-crotch-and-earned-a-rebuke-from-president-bush/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.9f3834a20168
