The peach trees are beautiful with loads of blooms. So frost will ruin chances of fruit this year. Trees are too tall to cover. We have one peach tree for zone 4, and it doesn't have blooms/buds, so at least we may get something from that one.
Hope you are doing well. Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.
It is 18F and six inches of snow right now. About time for indoor starts though.
Pinging the list.
The lawn has been mowed, the camellias are starting to drop their blooms, 2 tulips have opened with 3 more on the way. The fruit tree blossoms have started to open, and the roses are stretching their limbs to the sun.
I found some bulbs on my desk, so even though I have NO idea what they are, I put them in the front flowerbed with the camellias and poppies right along the sidewalk. I still haven’t seeded the hollyhocks yet. Maybe next week...
Didn’t have to do jury duty, so that’s a relief.
We have a windstorm coming in, so today was spent battening down. Loaded the firewood from the neighbour’s tree into the back of the truck for splitting, anchored the tarp over the Airstream, etc.
The seedlings in the garden room are doing very well, but I still need to get the sink hooked up (bad, lazy Don).
Nothing else to share this week, all the best to all my fellow gardening FRiends, and may G_d bless and protect us all
Have you any kerosene heaters? I have heard of those being used near fruit trees in similar situations.
Our area is still seeing snow, wind, cold temps. Rather a late start to spring. I did get to chit-chat with Lady Groundhog who lives under my she-shed. So, spring can’t be TOO far off now.
Any advice on creating a raised garden bed?
HI!
Do you remember the variety of peach that’s hardy to zone 4?
Hi, Greeneyes. Somehow, I’ve never run across this thread B4. Please add me to your list.
And... I have a question. We are going to be hit by that cold weather you mention, too. It won’t be quite as cold - maybe down to 27 on Sat. night. Can the peonies coming up take that without being covered? No, I don’t have a clue as to what varieties we have. The remaining daffodils will be ok, I would guess. The scattered hyacinths probably are at risk tho’, correct?
Snow will be here tomorrow. My Century plant (inside) has four babies, waiting for new homes, lol. I’m working on a hillbilly hydro sled. I was in the farm store and saw this plastic cargo sled and was thinking what a great soaking tub that would be. I’m rigging up a propane stove, copper tube coil, and 12vdc solar water pump. I’ve got a bubbler pad for it too, but need to work on a device to power it. It’s been a fun project, I still have to bend the coil, buy a pool thermometer and test it out. I’m so tired of being cold, lol.
Last Saturday, I cleared the bog filter surface of much and dead foliage. Sunday I suited up and cleaned the duck pond. Got the waterfall and bog pumps running.
Sunday, I also pulled up all of the drip irrigation from Barbs raised beds so that I can till and bury PVC piping for a permanent, inground feeder system for the raised beds.
Of course, then the snow came! About an inch, which melted, and then, yesterday, another dusting, which hasnt melted, since!
Barb has tomatoes and peppers and some flower seedlings up. I still havent moved that darned, cast iron sink down into the basement!
I turned 71 on Wednesday. Just another day in paradise!
South of Boston, Zone 6b, last week just raked up around my shrubs before the yellow jackets return...hate ‘em. Transplanted 2 rhubarb plants from containers and maybe next year will divide them into four plants each.
Yesterday, I stood at the cashier in the hardware Store gazing out at the wheelbarrows, tillers, bags of mulch, and stacks of garden furniture, all being buried under a blanket of snow. The cashier rolled his eyes and said, “I wish I hadn’t taken in all the snowblowers...I should have left them out another week!”
Hello all , I hope spring has sprung where you are! Good planting!
Fortunately I decided to just transplant my tomatoes and peppers into bigger pots last weekend instead of my new garden spaces. Still wanting to work some compost into the new soil hubby bought. It’s supposed to have some compost mixed in but the feel of it led me to think I wanted more organic stuff. I’ve probably got a yard of finished compost ready to work in but haven’t had the time with only 3 weeks to organize a nice wedding shower. The last 2 nights have dived to freezing even here in central Texas so I brought about 2 dozen pots in our sunroom for protection.
I think our peaches look ok. They are past blossom stage and after checking yesterday and today they look good. Pomegranate bush is in full blossom and a little more exposed than the peaches so I’m in “wait and see” mode on those.
My son-in-law up on the Red River was madly wrapping his peach trees when he got home Friday. Their trees are covered in blooms and he called me Friday night to ask if I thought wrapping with every available piece of fabric and plastic would save the fruit. I told him the thing to do is just pray while wrapping because only God can show that answer. I’m adding my prayers to that because I’m the one who gets to can up the extras on the halves.
Today I get to cart all those pots back out after I finish another item of shower prep, meaning if i have the time. Shower is next Saturday so I’m hoping that this time next week I’m working soil again. It is past time I get some food in the ground for our area but perhaps God also threw me this shower work knowing this weekend’s freeze would mess up any spring seedlings out there. I think I’m going to stick with that reasoning to belay my frustration of not having time to garden the past 2 weeks.
Snowing in west metro Minneapolis again! It was 5 degrees last night! March was the coldest ever on record with average temp at 22.9. The next coldest was 23 degrees in 1936. I feel like we live in Narnia with a never ending winter. Normal highs should be approaching 60. It’s 30 as I type.
Before our last round of 6” snow I noticed daylilies and chives coming up. I’m sure the daffodils are up somewhere under the white stuff too.
This is sooooo depressing.
Glad your peach trees are doing well. I donated a peach tree last year to the gardens of our local historical society and as of last fall, it was doing well. I’ll have to get an update on the tree when the gardens caregivers give a garden report at our upcoming meeting. I’m thinking of donating a second peach tree this year when the nursery puts them out for sale, when the weather warms up.
Weather has not been good for planting here as well. There are plenty of purchased plants just waiting to get outside and in the ground.
I picked a good week to vacation in sunny Florida. I’m hearing from #1 Marine Daughter that weather conditions at home in Central Missouri have been rather unpleasant since Mrs. Augie and I headed south.
Today has been rainy, but for the most part the weather has been very nice down here. This will blow out overnight and things will be back to sun and fun tomorrow.
