Well, depends. Lazy me - I have put down cardboard over the yucky area. Stacked concrete blocks around it. Dumped Compost, Vermiculite, and Peat Moss in equal volumes mixed well. Plant and water. I just use a yard stick to measure rather than a grid.
I am not sure. I went to get the packing slip, but it doesn’t give me the name. I think it may have been the compact Elberta.
No I don’t have any kerosene heaters. We do have some lanterns. I’ll have to ask hubby if he thinks he wants to try and get a heater.

i need to acidify my blueberries but not when the ground is saturated. At the rate the rain has been coming down the last month, i may never get to do it
but the wee arugula is coming up! i love seeing the little heart-shaped leaves :)

And... I have a question. We are going to be hit by that cold weather you mention, too. It won’t be quite as cold - maybe down to 27 on Sat. night. Can the peonies coming up take that without being covered? No, I don’t have a clue as to what varieties we have. The remaining daffodils will be ok, I would guess. The scattered hyacinths probably are at risk tho’, correct?
Snow will be here tomorrow. My Century plant (inside) has four babies, waiting for new homes, lol. I’m working on a hillbilly hydro sled. I was in the farm store and saw this plastic cargo sled and was thinking what a great soaking tub that would be. I’m rigging up a propane stove, copper tube coil, and 12vdc solar water pump. I’ve got a bubbler pad for it too, but need to work on a device to power it. It’s been a fun project, I still have to bend the coil, buy a pool thermometer and test it out. I’m so tired of being cold, lol.

I will add you to my list. Pings are only once a week on Friday. I am really not sure of the exact answer to your question. When it comes to stuff like daffodils etc. I never bother to cover them up, and it’s never hurt them including my hyacinths.
I always keep several row covers on hand, and if there is anything that I’m not sure about and want to make sure have a good chance, I use the row covers on them.
I think you could also get by with a sheet or plastic. Just make sure to take the plastic off before the sun makes it too warm. That’s why I like row covers - they breathe, let in rain and sun, yet help to keep stuff warm.
Last Saturday, I cleared the bog filter surface of much and dead foliage. Sunday I suited up and cleaned the duck pond. Got the waterfall and bog pumps running.
Sunday, I also pulled up all of the drip irrigation from Barb’s raised beds so that I can till and bury PVC piping for a permanent, inground feeder system for the raised beds.
Of course, then the snow came! About an inch, which melted, and then, yesterday, another dusting, which hasn’t melted, since!
Barb has tomatoes and peppers and some flower seedlings up. I still haven’t moved that darned, cast iron sink down into the basement!
I turned 71 on Wednesday. Just another day in paradise!
Yes, I think the sheet of plastic would suffice, it’s just that ours are about shot. I put out one last night (snow is falling now) and it (plastic) got pretty well ripped up by the wind. Will have to buy more. :-(
I know the peonies have been dinged a couple times in the past if not covered - just not sure how cold it got, those times.

South of Boston, Zone 6b, last week just raked up around my shrubs before the yellow jackets return...hate ‘em. Transplanted 2 rhubarb plants from containers and maybe next year will divide them into four plants each.
Yesterday, I stood at the cashier in the hardware Store gazing out at the wheelbarrows, tillers, bags of mulch, and stacks of garden furniture, all being buried under a blanket of snow. The cashier rolled his eyes and said, “I wish I hadn’t taken in all the snowblowers...I should have left them out another week!”

True Daniel, I just had a walk in the garden and see a lot of buds popping on my fruit trees, hoping to do some brush burning next weekend and maybe plant some peas. I transplanted some rhubarb last weekend and my raised beds were pretty workable down to at least six inches. This year I will plant asparagus !!!
