Apple wants to transform self-driving car interiors into virtual reality ‘entertainment hubs’ [tr]

Apple could soon revolutionise how people spend their time on the road by building virtual reality 'entertainment hubs' into self-driving cars.

The firm has filed a patent that describes how passengers in autonomous vehicles could pass the time with VR headsets.

The headsets would allow passengers to play games, or, if they choose, create a 'relaxing' environment for them while on their journey.

Apple also suggests that future cars could lack windows, instead using interior screens alongside the VR headsets to display virtual surroundings.

Anyone else remember when cutting edge in-vehicle entertainment was car bingo?

What a depressing article. Millennials should love it, though

This isn't talking about "cars", regardless of the terminology in the patent. It's talking about something closer to "Personal Transport Pods".

Consider: trains on tracks or planes on autopilot -- you pull down the shades and fall asleep.

So what's the big deal just because it's a car?

(Other than the fact that they still have a long way to go with autonomous automobile design...)

How is this idea patentable? If I were to add peanut butter to the mix, could I patent that?

...or watch a movie, or play on your laptop or tablet...

May I predict that “virtual reality sex” with celebrities and porn stars will be one of the popular choices for passing the time in self-driving vehicles. Considering how fast the WorldWideWeb reportedly developed the porn industry in new directions, this seems inevitable.

Only if it's crunchy. Smooth has been done...

Great, so you can be totally engrossed in your VR porn while the self-driving car is mowing down pedestrians!

I remember decades ago, on family trips, where part of the entertainment, as such, was seeing different parts for the country, seeing mountains, farmland, etc which we didn’t normally see.

And what’s with this idea that people have to be constantly entertained while traveling?

Some people have DVD players and other entertainment in their cars, to keep their children occupied on even short trips running errands and such.

I just don’t get it.

Me, too!
The Left already live in Fantasyland.. They don’t need to be doing VR while driving.. Their cell phones aren’t enough entertainment? Ugh.

IRK! And what is behind this drive to have us constantly consuming 'entertainment'? Seems these days all gas stations now have pumps with built in TV screens upchucking advertising and "news".

Feels like there is no escaping it for even a minute.

Everything will be fine in VR until the car screws up and reality intrudes in the form of an accident.

“So what’s the big deal just because it’s a car?”

People would be just as perturbed, I think, if you suggested their plane doesn’t need a pilot, or their train doesn’t need an engineer.
