Documentary on the French Foreign Legion including modern recruitment and training. (French w/ English subtitles appx 1:40 mins)
The Legion has long had a reputation for taking those that no other military would, and turning them around with their tough as nails discipline. And to some degree that remains true. But they are quite selective. Only around 1 in 8 applicants get through the initial screening. Those who do, get a new name and background and can gain French citizenship after three years of honorable service. In the old days they took people on something close to a no questions asked basis. Not anymore. The screening is very intensive and thet want to know everything about you. They will still take people who have had scrapes with the law, but there are limits and applicants have to be completely upfront about it. The Legion runs background checks through INTERPOL. They won't take anyone with active warrants, who are in debt, and those guilty of very serious crimes like murder, mayhem, sexual crimes, drug dealing or anyone connected with organized crime.

Simon Murray’s classic _Legionaire_ details his time in the Legion at the close of the war in Algeria. Thrilling stuff. Made a big impact on my decision to join the Army out of high school.
They should use the Legion Etrangere on the suburbs of Paris and Calais. Then maybe we can borrow them since our govt won’t clean up our messes.
Or mouth full of...

Okay, thanks. Duh!
Okay, thanks. Duh!
Imperialism had its downside.
Every now and then I reminisce about actually wanting to join the FFL after I got out of the Army.
FFL: The ultimate cannon fodder. No thanks. It isn’t noble or romantic to die for no good reason.
The FFL is not cannon fodder. It is a crack infantry brigade and more. It is also one of the few places that will take people who have been living on the edge of society and give them a fresh start. In times past if you hit a rough patch in life or had a scrape with the law, you could just move and change your name. Not anymore.
The FFL is one of the very few exceptions. If your life is in the gutter and you want to hit the reset button, they will give you that chance.
That all said, they are simply not supported, are given sh*t assignments, and left to die if overrun. Cannon fodder. Romantic bravado aside.
