I was just starting my medical career in the mid-1970’s when I encountered a patient with the then-new PPNG (penicillinase-producing neisseria gonorhhea) that was resistant to all known antibiotics at the time. He had contracted it from a bar girl in the Phillipines. This guy was wearing a condom to keep the discharge from soaking through his pants. That was NASTY!
He could have saved himself a lot of trouble by wearing that condom during the encounter!

During my time in the Military, I remember hearing stories about guys not being able to return from the PI to the USA because they had a incurable STD.
They would give you medal if you did not catch a STD while on your short tour there.
